Reading will determine the literacy skill of someone, and the literacy skill will determine the comprehension or insight (also including critical thinking) and the response of someone in facing the spread of pieces of information or data. Teachers and students must get used to the reading process to enhance their critical thinking and discussion of the material.

Thank you Dr Willy! I think you have successfully convinced me of the benefits of reading and how it also greatly affects their writing. However, students don't gravitate towards books nowadays whenever they have pockets of free time and especially with older children at the secondary level, I am wondering about the effectiveness of graded reading. It feels like a whole school approach is needed where there are multi-pronged approaches in place, from the EL lessons, timetabling (time for reading), library promotions etc. Building a culture is something that I find really challenging (especially when they are older) and maybe I also wonder if there are any tips you have? As for writing, I find the Noticing Hypothesis something enlightening for me (similar to the discussion on the amount of feedback we give to students in our lesson yesterday). I am guilty of pointing out everything because I find texts so rich and feel the need to do it justice by explaining everything; often forgetting that they have a limited capacity to absorb information. It is a conscious effort for teachers to restrain themselves and something I will now make myself think about whenever I am assessing their work. Secondly, I feel that it might be useful for us to explicitly explain the 4 quadrants to students, especially since I am dealing with students at a secondary level. This is because I find that at the secondary level we need to explain the rationale behind the things we do and so subsequently, the 4 quadrants will be useful in helping us to explain how we aligned the class exercises and activities. (e.g. process writing, targeted reading exercises / graded reading(?) etc.) All in all, thank you very much for taking us on this course!

Thank you for sharing the video with us. I found it useful to learn how it is important to recognize that writing has specific structure and organization that we need to teach students. It is nevertheless important for us to remember that reading is an important first step to gain the vocabulary and grammatical structure before moving to writing.

Oh yes! Sir, I would also like to thank you for recommending all those good books and reading materials during the course. I have started on a some of them and found them very interesting and insightful! Maybe you should also do videos introducing more books you would recommend in various areas for EL teachers like us!

Interestingly, I was just telling my colleague how much I dislike writing. It is a challenge therefore for me to my students to write! On the contrary, I do enjoy reading a great variety of text. I am enlightened by what you have mentioned in your video, that reading is the way to start the cycle of reading and writing. Perhaps just like myself, I would first need to encourage my students to read and enjoy reading and eventually go on to the next level of enjoying reading and writing . Hopefully, we all end up excelling in both!

The apprenticeship model... Am I even writing? I think this is the most important question for myself, and also my students. The 4 pathways remind me of the importance of perseverance and patience needed in writing. Something to bear in mind as I teach the children writing. I also need to be patient with them.

Good writers are good readers but good readers may not be good writers. In mathematical language, good writer is a proper subset of good reader. Writing is definitely harder than reading at least for me as I find it daunting to write thousand words essay but reading as long one can read the key words would have a good idea of the content.

I find (i) the apprenticeship model of learning and (ii) four pathways to bridge the reading-writing gap useful and applicable for teaching my students to write, especially the reminder on the importance of providing students with lots of models, language input and guidance. A teacher’s guidance must be intentional and on-going, to help students become more aware of text features. The quote from Krashen also highlighted that there is no short cut to good writing; it is really reading and writing until one is able to achieve accuracy, fluency, complexity, clarity and coherence.

The 4 pathways for bridging the reading-writing gap is a useful theory to have in mind when teaching my students to write. Most times, when students write, teachers do provide structures for them to follow like the narrative plot structure, See-Think-Wonder etc. However, without explicitly highlighting text features (and its link to PACC) or sharing examples of writing pieces, some students are unable to visualise or know where to begin. Examples of texts help students build their confidence. I think teachers have the difficult job of inspiring students to be readers, especially the most reluctant ones. Syahidah

A very enriching and beneficial video for me as a teacher to help my students on bridging the learning gap between reading and writing, relationship between reading and writing and ideas to help the students to bridge the gap. This is often observed as a struggle in the group of students I teach. The video has given me more awareness and insights as a takeaway on the main areas of why writing can be challenging for students. Reading and writing is connected. However as shared by Dr Willy, indeed students are unable to see the link between reading and writing clearly. At times, it is not as straightforward. Students who cannot read well cannot write well, while good readers are good writers. Reading needs semantic processing for meaning. Writing is more challenging as it is syntactic in nature. Writing is more context independent & there is structures like coherence, grammar, markers, standard variety of English, content to follow as compared to talking. Hence, this makes writing more challenging. This thus leads to cognitive burden in students, which I understand why they seem to feel lost, helpless and are in need of step-by-step guidance. Some ways I can help will be the apprentice model of learning - seeing how writing is done until students are independently able to write. Hence, my role as a teacher is critical to help my learners to write better and read better- Devi

I think that the 4 pathways of bridging the reading writing gap is useful in helping me to teach students to write. Beyond reading for enjoyment, to teach students to read like a writer is important as this will help them to notice writing features a lot better and gain knowledge about how they would have to think about purpose, audience, context and language features when they write. -Vanessa

A good realisation for me that a good reader does not necessarily mean that he/she is a good writer. This makes me reflect on how I can guide my students in the classroom.

This video has been most informative! I have gleaned that reading sufficiently aids in implicit learning of grammar structures and syntax, aiding synthesis of information, which would be greatly beneficial when writing. However, to be good writers, individuals would need to 1) write like a reader, considering PACC and 2) write like a writer through processes for refinement. Practice is required to achieve accuracy, fluency, complexity and coherence in writing. - Jacelyn

Yes, technology can improve teaching and learning when it is used in combination with effective pedagogy. Technology can provide new and innovative ways to engage students, facilitate collaboration and personalize learning, however, it is important to ensure that the use of technology is aligned with pedagogical goals and supports student-centered learning experiences. Effective pedagogy, such as project-based learning or gamification, can be enhanced by technology tools, while technology alone is not enough to create a high-quality learning environment. The integration of technology and pedagogy should be carefully planned and implemented to maximize its potential benefits for teaching and learning.

I think we are pretty much always critical when reading at some level, even if it's minor. It's more a matter of how much. If we read a sign and it says, "Danger!" we'll firstly wonder where the danger is. There's critical thinking at some level right there. Just wondering where the danger is, is a low level of critical thinking - you're assessing the one word on that sign. If we read a sign that says, "Pink Elephants here." our first thought is, "Where?" That is also critical thinking at some level. Critical thinking with reading a sliding scale, not an on/off switch.
