You do so well interacting with your birds! It’s really cool to see you reading their body language and adjusting the pace of your training. I didn’t fully understand the point of touch training but it makes a lot more sense now that I’ve seen you use it to help desensitise them!!!

Thank you so much for this!!! Pet stores try to profit from people thinking these are low maintenance pets but they’re only low maintenance if you neglect them! I had a budgie as a kid and even though I tried to do my best for her it wasn’t enough and I don’t want others or other birds to go through that. Your videos are so important! I asked so many questions when I got my budgie but the pet store’s advice was nowhere near enough and some things they advised (mirrors, bells) were even harmful. When I actually found out the basics of budgie care I told my parents but my dad made fun of me, yelled at me, and refused to let me improve her cage and diet. I tried the best I could, she spent lots of time outside her cage since it was too small and I tried to give her fresh food even though I had to mostly feed her seed. I even helped her learn to walk again after an injury when the vet said they couldn’t do anything (a general vet, not an avian vet). I’d always let her out but she didn’t like being too close to people before her injury, she liked to be near me when I did music practice but she was still very shy. Luckily I didn’t accidentally traumatise her when I had to help her. Through helping her with her injury we became best friends and from then on she would climb all over me. But her lifespan was still cut very short by the inadequate care and no bird deserves that! If I’d known I couldn’t care for her well I wouldn’t have gotten her.

I’m getting budgies from a neighbour. I couldn’t find a proper seed mix, so I went on KZfaq for a make your own list. I’ve bought linseeds, chia seeds, hulled millet, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, oat groats, quinoa, porridge oats, almonds and walnuts. Are all of these things ok for their seed mix or is anything missing? I also have cuttlefish bone for them.

Very useful. I find the Sibley guide requires too much bird knowledge to use for identification purposes..at least for a beginner. The Kaufman guide having a color lookup method seems good for quick identification.

I have 2 new budgies. Can I train them both together?
@davidthebirdguy517
@davidthebirdguy517 2 ай бұрын
You can. However, It will be pretty difficult to train them together as their fear will build off of each others. I would recommend keeping them in separate cages and focusing on the most confident one. Then move onto the other one as it will see that your other bird is already comfortable with you. Having a healthy diet will really help you as well!!!

Sit near the cage and talk to ur feather friend every day. Talk to em like they are are 3-5 years old. Then move ur hand to the cage slowly and try feed em some millet. Make some sounds with ur mouth that they can relate to. Say kissing sounds ect.

Some new ideas about taming Budgies. I loved the idea of taking the food out at night. Also, I think spending and 1-1/2 to 2 hours with your bird gives them some good bonding time. Talking in a calm, low voice also is very good idea.

even after more then a month my budgie hasnt changed in behavior since day 1....refuses to eat millet... tries to fly away in the cage even if you just walk by the cage....no matter how many hours i spend time with her and talk to her and try to give her millet she just sits there and tries to run away from the millet instead of trying to eat it...

Due to a crisis my friend is in-my husband and I agreed to home her parakeet for a short while but it may become permanent. She is a sweet, 1.5 year old yellow Budgie who seems to have never been tamed. Any contact with our hands getting too close results in a bite. We are probably not the best parents for her and not sure what to do.

There seems to be some differences in how different bird trainers discuss having your bird "step up" by touching or not touching your bird. Wouldn't a scared bird run/fly away if you tried to have him "step up" with your finger but he was scared? I'm asking because I'm considering getting a bird after decades of not having one and trying to have this new bird be hand tamed and want to be with its humans. Good video, thanks. Liked and subbed.
@davidthebirdguy517
@davidthebirdguy517 4 ай бұрын
Yes, so it appears that you didn't understand the first part of the video which was target training. Once your bird is target trained you should be able to target them onto your hand. With out touching them. This gives them the option to step up and if they dont want to, that's ok. It simply means they are not ready. Where as, if you were to press against their belly, birds interpret that as forcing and it can break trust quickly. Its all about giving the bird a say. In part one kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7ubZphy2bylgKc.html I explained how to get your bird more comfortable to you and part two sort of builds off of that. I plan to update these videos soon!
@notsosilentmajority1
@notsosilentmajority1 4 ай бұрын
@@davidthebirdguy517 I didn't really explain it right, what I meant was that there are a lot of videos out there that tell you to press your finger against your birds chest and say "step up", in order to train them. I think I like what you are saying better. Got it. Thank you.

Did the first video have the same title, beside the part 2? I didn't see a link and the Part 1 may have a different title?? Not sure but either way you have a great channel. I had parakeets as a kid growing up but I've never really hand a thoroughly hand tamed parakeet or one that talks at all. That's all I'm looking for, now that I have the time. We may get a parakeet but want to be sure so that the bird has a great life. Did some surfing and found your channel. Liked and subbed. 👍

Yes, what happened to you is what I call the baby phase issue. When people first get their birds when they are baby's they will love and cuddle them. Baby birds are very tolerant but when they get older they learn how to not be so tolerant and owners break trust almost immediately because they try to cuddle them again this time the bird is not so tolerant. It is also very difficult to train to fearful birds at once because their fear will build off of each other. I would recommend implementing a proper diet, sleep schedule and separate them. Then go to this website birdtricksstore.com/ I would recommend purchasing the BirdTricks Training course for beginners. You can also purchase a consultation for further help. The BirdTricks KZfaq channel is also a great resource for your situation. Feel free to purchase more courses to help you. Do as much research as you can and mainly DONT GIVE UP! If you do this will make it harder to deal with later. YOU GOT THIS! It may seem over whelming but it took me a couple of years to learn what I know now.

Sometimes pet store animals are pretty tame because they see people walking past them everyday. I'm not saying that their 100% gonna be tame though, I got a crestie from Petco in like 2022 and she HATED me so much. If I touched her the would instantly run to the other side of her tank in less than 2 seconds(she tolerates me now). And I got a bearded dragon there once and she was very calm. I have never gotten a bird though, but I'm gonna assume that they are less calm and tame because their tiny lil things and have probably only been touched once in their life </3
