The valve adjustment intervals worry me.i had a v65sp which burnt out valves twice what do you think
@oldguyinshed1703
@oldguyinshed1703 4 күн бұрын
Burnt valves can come from a couple of areas besides valve clearance, fuel type, carburation, ignition timing not to mention valve timing. I know this is probably no help what so ever but if I'm uncertain of valve clearance I tend to prefer being on the side of a bigger gap the safer.

I think, but I might be wrong, that the Italian manufacturers were given more help by their Gov’ through taxes on Japanese machines and such. Which I’m sure helped to an extent! Whereas the British manufacturers really got no help!

How would you compare the Guzzi Norge which iv ridden and the Yamaha FJR 1300 i had trouble stopping her because of an injury to my right leg i couldn't put enough weight onto the back brake or carburettor fitting so i decided on the FJR which has done 165800 KMs now without any issues

Two very different bikes, though I only had a very short test on the FJR 1300 I found it to be heavier and not as nimble as the Norge. My impression of the FJR was that it would make an excellent motorway bike. Hope this helps.

I ride a 2010 Harley Electra-Glide "dresser" with a "batwing fairing" and a few more older Harley's (FL front ends) that only have the quick disconnect front end windscreen. I can usually just clean the bugs of the windscreen on the older bikes and perhaps have to clean the front fork legs and front facing side of the gas tank. With the full dresser, I get dirt and bugs in every nook and cranny, which I believe has to do with turbulent and chaotic air flows on both the front and rear side of the fairing. e.g. dirt behind the primary headlamp and fairing, and then dirt allow over my horn, engine cases, etc. from wind that gets diverted by the fairing and moves under the bike and rider. Takes me two days to clean up after a weeks travel. On the older bikes, I can wipe down with a spare napkin from the restaurant after lunch and not look at the bike for another week.

I think you could be on to something with the way the air flows around the bike. It seems as if the V85 is hell bent on covering itself in road dirt where as the Breva does not.

I really do enjoy your videos, including the occasional rambling nature of some of them (that's why I come back, time after time). One of your videos, comparing the Breva to the later V7, was the reason I ended up getting a 750 Breva as my first "big bike". I have heard a few people saying that their Guzzi bikes tend to get very dirty, but, being a relatively new rider, I have nothing to compare my experience to. Comfort!. After about three hours I find that there is an arse -seat incompatability. Not the fault of the bike, not the fault of my arse, I'm looking to have a gel insert added.
@oldguyinshed1703

I've never had a problem with the Breva seat, although other bikes I have had to use supplementary gel pads, I opted for the type that basically tied on top of existing seat, they did work very well.

Nice to see/hear from you again. Totally agree regarding the Breva, I enjoy mine very much and it has plenty of good for “only” a 750. It does everything I ask it to and has no problems at all. Servicing is easy but how about a little series of how you service your bikes as they need it. Maybe show how easy it is to check/adjust the valve clearances? Just a thought. Can’t help you with the bike clean or dirty question though. No wine so are you abstaining for a while after Dublin? Cheers Paul

You don't want them quiet. Quiet means you're running the closer of the two valve clearances, which can lead to dropped valves aka the Beetle flat four engine. Volkswagen solved their dropped valve problems by running bigger tappet clearances. Think the guzzi problem is due to massive pushrods retaining heat after the rest of the engine has cooled down. The valve stops seating, gets cherry red and soft and the valve head then breaks off. 'Course if you don't work the engine hard you're unlikely to have problem.

Greetings OldGuyinShed, congratulations on that new beauty and thank you for sharing, especially starting her up and letting us experience the idle. I have a story for you. My vx-800 had a dragging rear brake, which has been a long term problem I was unaware of. Well my eyes finally opened up and I got to work, rather reluctantly, but I did get it resolved and am very happy again. My mileage has improved to boot! The rear caliper is a two piston design and the inside was jammed up at full out position. The only way I knew was the rear brake would make a rattling sound and I noticed pressing it would make i stop. I was out on a long ride and it kept getting more persistent until I finally pulled over and noticed a hot caliper.

Indeed I might get another M-G, a bit smaller, as well. Or not, but I am keeping the California. If I may suggest - keep that motorcycle. You will notice that it seems to get better and better.
