Yes a foil that can change shape to deal with different speeds would be cool! The problem is that they are quite small and heavily loaded (e.g. compared to airplane wings) so it’s quite an engineering challenge.

Thank you for the demonstration. I'm in the middle of taking my first online course for the Washington State boater's exam, and it frustrated me that the course doesn't cover how to actually use any of these devices...so I jumped over to good ol' KZfaq to find out. Yours is the 3rd video I watched on the subject, and the only one that mentioned the noise, the heat, and really showed the molten slag (1 briefly motioned it, just to say hold your arm out so it doesn't drip on you). But YIKES, that dripping into the boat?!! That's important to consider. I also had misgivings about polluting the ocean by tossing the spent flares in, but now I understand the hazards of trying to keep them onboard. Well done, Sir! I'm back to studying now, wish me luck!

Is this why AC foiling boats cannot point any higher than 45° as shown on tv graphics overlaid on the course? Is it, the faster you go the more you have to bear away because the wind is being bent to come where the boat is pointing? Cheers😊
@SailingTipsCa
@SailingTipsCa 10 күн бұрын
To me they appear to tack and gybe through about 90 degrees so 45 degrees off the wind as you say. But in order to do this they need incredibly tight sheeting angles for upwind and only ease the sheets slightly for downwind.
@robertcain3426
@robertcain3426 10 күн бұрын
@@SailingTipsCa So, do you agree that the faster you go, the less you can make to true wind. Debating this subject, I believe that thos is one of the biggest reasons slower boats seem to point higher to true wind, all things being equal. Cheers
@SailingTipsCa
@SailingTipsCa 8 күн бұрын
@@robertcain3426 Yes the faster they go the further they drive the apparent wind forward, which ultimately limits how high they can point. At the same time pointing as high as possible in a fast boat generally doesn’t yield the best VMG, or quickest time to the windward mark. In my trimaran I can point as high as any monohull but then I’m also stuck going about the same speed as them. Or I can bear away 5 degrees and go twice as fast, and still beat them to the windward mark even though I’m not pointing as high because the extra speed more than compensates.

Good piece of kit, now at a reasonable price. My comment is do you need all that complexity. You can get a straight LFP battery for the same price and four times the capacity. Would that small Bluetti have sufficed for your two day trip? If you do need 110 / 230v, better to have a small petrol generator. Then you can run all day, mine 1000w and about the same cost (ok, again)
@SailingTipsCa
@SailingTipsCa 19 күн бұрын
I think it’s great that there are so many options out there for everybody to get the exact pieces to suit their needs! There are different sized Bluetti packs but the current trend is towards larger inverters whereby I’d rather have a larger battery and a smaller inverter. Many devices don’t even require an inverter though if you can do a direct DC-DC conversion.

the windex literatly points to the wind. The luff is literatly the front of the sail. If the front of the sail goes straight into the wind...never mind why am I bothering
@SailingTipsCa
@SailingTipsCa 23 күн бұрын
The sail is not a straight board and has curvature to it and the leach of the sail will “bend” the wind some 20-30 degrees from the angle of the luff. If the sheet had no tension on it you’re right the sail will just flop, but if the sail is trimmed properly you get nice laminar flow over both sides if you align the luff with the windex. If you are not aligning the luff with the windex you are probably stalling the sail somewhat.
