Looks like a really nice house kit! Not exactly an old Pearl Export kit with brass cymbals. But it's obviously in the club's interest to have good gear.

Great playing! I am 54 yrs old and about to start playing drums. I am getting a nice, used set of Gretsch Renowns: 10, 12, 14, 22 kick with matching 14” snare, all hardware and some decent cymbals. I have played guitar for 40 years and have a very light touch. Please advise - Can experienced drummers develop a light touch on drums to help keep the volume way down at home…or do you think having low volume cymbals, either Evans DB One mesh toms or simple pads to lay on toms, putting some muffle material against the kick heads, and laying a Sabian Quiet Tone Snare Drum practice pad on my snare would be necessary. Trying to keep my family happy and protect my hearing. Thanks!

Hi Von. I think that lately something has gone awry with your mic placement or post-production in that rehearsal space. You have lost a lot of the defining higher frequency clarity that was audible in older videos and the snare drum in particular sounds like it's down in a tube. Still beautiful playing though!

Do you actually prefer traditional grip, or, is that how you learned? So very many people have no clue that traditional came from old marching drums that had to be worn to the side so you could march. I am surprised it is still taught. I fought against it with my teacher way, way back, but, lost. I always said, " If I drop two bananas on the floor, I'm not going to pick one up this way and the other a different way. But, to each his own. Just wanted your take on the subject. Peace

Thanks Steve for sharing your knowledge and thoughts on traditional grip! I love traditional and matched grips. For Jazz I feel the asymmetry of my hands with traditional grip makes me more creative. For brushes, I feel it really makes a difference to be more musical. Keep swinging my friend 🤙

Too bad they didn't have a broader collection of the Turkish handmade goodness. You need to head out to a cymbal shop in Istanbul to find the right ride...or just go over to one of the manufacturers. A hint--all of the current cymbal-smiths can be traced back to the original Istanbul factory. They all learned from Agop & Mehmet, or learned from one of their students.
@jazzdrumschool2 күн бұрын
Mike thanks for sharing your knowledge here! Actually, the owner of the shop went to the Istanbul factory after I made this video. I believe they have more of those cymbals now. Perhaps it's time for another trip to the store! Keep swinging my friend 🤙

I’ve been playing drums for 22 years, and my entire upbringing was on rock ‘n’ roll and classic rock. But I’ve always wanted to get into jazz. It’s just so inaccessible because unlike rock where there’s a clear right and wrong answer, jazz is so open ended. And I haven’t found an obvious entry point. If I was teaching someone to play classic rock, I would tell them to pull up AC/DC back in black and practice that. But I have not found an equivalent track for jazz.
@jazzdrumschool9 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching and for sharing your drumming experience. I understand where you are coming from. That's why I created Jazz Drum School. I want to make Jazz drumming accessible for every drummer. Jazz drumming is actually World drumming because we learn to play drum beats from many genres across the globe like Samba, Bossa Nova, Mambo, Bolero, Songo, Hip-Hop, Calypso, pop and a whole lot more. Over the years, Jazz has really become a melting pot of music. Jazz Swing feel is also unique and so fun to play. If you ever need a hand with your Jazz drumming, I'd love to help you out at Jazz Drum School: jazzdrumschool.com/ This Jazz classic "Kind of Blue" is a great place to start for your Jazz listening if you haven't already checked it out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rKqhiK93us2ac40.htmlsi=CdnMyvtRg39K8tau I hope all that helps and keep swinging my friend 🤙

@jazzdrumschool wow Von, that will be interesting. What would really be cool, rudiments with brushes (not as Alan Dawsons using stick strokes) but brush motions (sweeps, etc)
@jazzdrumschool9 күн бұрын
Thanks Ron for the suggestion! Actually, if you take any rudiment and play it laterally (from the side) you can get a softer and more "brushy" sound with any rudiment!
