I am also going thru this now the face down position STINKS!! I bought a head donut to help, but...the Forehead trick helped a lot, as airflow to your nose & mouth is important. Otherwise you suffocate easily. No matter what you try, I could never get comfortable,.had to get up every hour and ice the eye, take Tylenol to help.

I am scheduled for a second surgery within six weeks in my left eye as I believe I developed what is called a PVR after my first reattachment. While I am 70 most of my problems have to do with age I don't know how I would have handle it if I were younger. I am happy to see your positive attitude and helpful hints on how to get through this difficult experience. Your presentation was very precise and sincere and I know it will be a great help to those having this procedure for the first time. Thank you Sheila for taking the time to make this video and good luck.

Im on day 7 post surgery with retinal detachment with a gas bubble and buckle. I go for my recheck next week. The hardest part is sleeping on my stomach all the time. Its better using the massage table. My surgeon also lasered all my lattice degeneration. Im 63 and feel blessed to have the surgery.

Thank you so much for your honest experience and tips to get through this. I wish I had seen this before my vitrectomy. I finished my 2 week face down period. I'm still healing and can't wait to have my sight back in my eye.

Thank you for your comprehensive video, it was very helpful. I have probably watched a couple dozen videos = Yours is one of the better ones. I have a macular hole, and the surgeon is recommending a vitrectomy. I was informed that I could be in the face position, anywhere from one week, to a month. I have arthritis in my neck, shoulders, and lower back. I’m also (naturally) top-heavy. = This is a huge NO for me, my body honestly cannot be in this position for an extended period of time. I’ll be contacting Guide Dogs for the Blind - Which is a much more viable option for me. Thankfully, I’m a huge dog lover! Hopefully optometry and the like, will evolve for folks that are unable to partake in this type of recovery. Stay well! 🌹

Thanks Shiela I am 66 years old I am on my 14th day after surgery. I feel so positive after watching your video I had dreadful feeling of losing my left eye vision but I notice an improvement about 80 %. This has taught me to have patience I know I have a long way to recovery but feel hopeful. As for the facedown posturing was torture but I mastered the art of it now Thank you again for sharing❤

Thank you for sharing your experience. It really helps as much of what you speak of is not covered in post operative directions. Actually I had few other than lie facing down. I know it is an invasive surgery but I am 3 days into a recovery from a vitrectomy and no idea if it worked. I know everybody’s case is different. However, when did you first start seeing improvement in your vision? Your advice to visualize a successful operation and giving thanks for the incredible technology and health care professionals is truly inspiring. Thank you and glad to hear things turned out well for you.

It is now three weeks after the operation for me. I was given clearance a week ago to return to more or less normal life. That is, no more lying face down 24/7. The gas that I had injected into my eye finally disappeared yesterday. My sight has not returned to the way it was before. However, I have to give it time. My eye is still red but the swelling has subsided and the eyelid is almost back to normal. Straight lines appear wavy as others had reported.and things are not completely clear. I had a silicone band placed that will increase my myopia. This might be some of the blurry vision.. However, I am not sure yet if the macula has been affected. It does seem a little more foggy in the centre of my vision. Anyway, I have some vision now and I hope in time, things will continue to improve. I just wanted to share my experience for others who may be going through this and not knowing what to expect.

i wish, after all these years, that they had a more humane way to do this, vs the gas bubble. they tack it all back with the laser treatment. im considering vitrectomy, due to massive amounts of floaters, that nearly block much of my vision now and zapping them only helps for a couple of days. i also have the flashes of light when im in a dark room. so far, my retinas are good they said, but if they find a problem when they do the surgery, i would have to get the gas bubble, so i have put this surgery off cause i just cant lay on my frontside like that. i would get no sleep. your info is amazing, you covered it all from what i have learned about the eye surgery. how are you doing today? did you have to get cat surgery (as this is 7 yrs old now) just curious. i have had cat surgery in both eyes so i wont have to worry about that.

I’m day 7 post op. Crapping myself. Great video. I wasn’t given a huge amount of postural care advice- no where near as detailed as your video. It might depend on the extent of the detachment (I hope) as I was only advised to lie face down for 24 hrs. Then I’m daytime, head level, sleep face/ cheek down- never head up My main problem is being off work, cancelling my patients and trying to be invisible at home to a wife who looks angry at me for not helping out and a special needs son who doesn’t understand why I can’t play with him It’s only day 7. I feel useless redundant and no longer vital. It’s only day 7

@@richt5986 oh wow. On day 13 I had post op review. Discharged. Then I saw residual nasal shadow - went to their A+E - told normal healing. Flashers and floaters again on early December. Seen again in late December - told no probs - again from original surgery. 3 weeks later not improving - then the visual distortion on 24 Jan - got checked - big bleed now mac off - further surgery and cryo and laser and 7 days on my face. This time been off work with planned phased return from April. My rt eye VA is down - hoping new lens prescription helps - but got residual hall of mirrors effect from mac off. Its been a dick punch - getting support through the Facebook group. I had no risk factors and the red flags did not register on repeated slit lamp checks. It will happen again. So I’m gonna roll with these punches

Had my vitrectomy 4 days ago. I'm very anxious because I can't sleep at night, facing down has caused a big strain on my neck but I rather have a strain than no vision.
