At what stage did you flood the water ballast tanks?

I have done this passage a couple of times in my Drascombe Coaster and Drifter. The coastline is really spectacular and the passage around St Albans head has to be planned just right. I am based in Southampton Water and have sailed to Chichester many times. Thank you fo your posting.

Do you usually sail with water ballast full or empty ? Was it full during this video ?

I usually sail with the water ballast in and it was in during the filming of this video.

Thanks for the film good sailing, I really like the BRE and may well look to find one . Sailing from Chichester area might you offer a view on mooring / marina costs these days for a BRE and likely availability?

Hi, thank you for viewing my little film. I am glad you enjoyed it. There are many different options for mooring/marinas in Chichester Harbour. Our boat is a BC23 and we pay approx £3700 to have her in a marina on a fully serviced pontoon, but there are cheaper pontoon options and for a BRe the cost would be less. A mooring is considerably cheaper and there are lots to choose from around the harbour from Emsworth to Bosham to Itchenor etc. The best place to investigate options is the Chichester Harbour Conservancy: www.conservancy.co.uk. I thoroughly recommend the BRe. We had one and loved her, but eventually decided on the larger 23.

@@sailmor many thanks that’s very helpful , much appreciate the advice , I began thinking of a wayfarer but prefer something with a bit of shelter and not too much to tow although the BC23 is very attractive just perhaps more than I can handle to begin with but still thinking what to do

@@SH-xq4dq The BRe is basically a large dinghy with a cabin and also a spray hood for shelter. It is easy to tow and launch from a trailer, so you also have the option to store ashore. Northney Marina has a very convenient slipway and on shore storage facility. When we had ours we easily sailed it in Cornwall and also in the Lake District, as well as Chichester Harbour. Good luck with the decision making.

Many thanks Peter, thats very good of you to give these insights , the BRE would my first boat and my thinking is that it’s probably more manageable and flexible for sailing in different locations and to get experience after getting my tickets. I’d prefer the BC23 for its facilities on board and it’s just that bit bigger for family and just a better all round etc for bigger budget. Deciding next year 🤞

Very well photographed and edited. The closing sunset sequences are most evocative of a city both ancient and modern.

I like the boat, the prettiest produced by Swallow Yachts, I like where you're sailing - is that the famous Solent chop, captured on video for perhaps the first time? I like the visuals, and the captions, and the music, but not the sound balance. Are you perhaps familiar with the work of Erik Aanderaa, here on KZfaq, and the sailing videos he creates? One area where he really triumphs is in successfully talking to camera on deck, in very windy and often stormy conditions. I am sure he would be only too pleased to answer any technical queries and help with equipment recommendations. His video making is all self taught. I hope you don't mind too much my saying all that, because it seems to me that the sound balance is the only problem here.

Thank you, Tom. You are right about the sound balance and I am hoping to address the issue this year with some new equipment. We will see how that goes. Yes I very much enjoy Eric’s films and he is a much more professional filmmaker than me. I aim to improve. The entrance to Chichester harbour can be very choppy, even more than in this video. This is because the water is quite shallow at the harbour entrance. The Solent has strong tides and when the wind is against them you get choppy seas.

Thank you for sharing your film. Did you fill the ballast tank when the sea became choppy?

We generally sail with the ballast tank filled, but certainly on a windy day like this it would be sensible to have the tank filled. Glad you enjoyed the film. We love sailing Morwenna. Such a good boat.

@@sailmor It was kind of you to respond so promptly. In 2017 I test sailed a BRe 20 in Cardington but was a little overwhelmed with the size of the boat as it sat on its trailer. In the same year I bought a wayfarer , a dinghy that I knew quite well and a boat I was able to tow around the country quite comfortably. Looking at Colin's BRe has whetted my appetite once again. I feel that a wayfarer in such sea conditions would have resulted in a spray-soaked crew. I shall be in touch with Matt when this covid nonsense is over. Thanks once again Peter.
