For once our generation gives us something to be legitimately proud of. Nostalgic but no longer derivative. Comes from pain. From ambiguity. From fear and anxiety. From an ever uncertain future. But - as it turns out - this too - if we are lucky - shall be turned to art. These and other exulted thoughts and a few tears he allowed himself to entertain after putting all his eggs in one basket.

I saw Elliot in 1999 in SLC at Club Deviate. I, along with my crew, were quite a little clique of precocious, forlorn and melancholic teenagers, not fully appreciating what we were witnessing on stage as is so often problematic of the teenaged experience. I will never forget his performing The Beatles 'Long, Long, Long'--that was killer. Then, the second time I saw him perform live, it actually turned out being his final live anything ever, performing at RedFest on the University of Utah campus on 09/19/2003. Being 22-23 years of age at that point, those critical years between 17 to 23 one hopefully grows in many ways and learns to appreciate the world much more and went into seeing that performance to ensure I appreciated every strained moment. That would prove to be quite difficult if not outright impossible save for shear empathy for an obviously broken soul. As he would pass only 32 days later from the way he did, it's easy to imagine he was not really into it in any way whatsoever and it was abundantly clear. So heartbreaking hearing that news only a calendar month later, but had you seen that last performance (one can hardly call it a concert or full show) the news came as no surprise. Elliott looked MISERABLE the way only a true Misérable can. Such an unfortunate, tortured soul composed of pure musical and creative genius. Dude could pick a serious guitar and knew how to record any and all parts necessary without so much as batting an eye. A savant of the highest caliber.

I got a choke chain Made out of night train To keep your memory down In quicksand from the main man To gel everything out Always out on a joyride Lay it out from insides Always at a dead stall From sticking pins into miniature men Who can't feel it at all See you later See you later If I see you at all See you later See you later See you later If I see you at all See you later Walk through thick mud Looking for new blood Thinking I heard your name Cruel imagination is still giving me pain Just to find you with the Masterminder Of one of your little affairs Saying how he loves you now Let me show you how much I care See you later See you later If I see you at all See you later See you later If I see you at all See you later See you later If I see you at all See you later
