Cool, another video. I loved your Alembic demos because I also own a few Alembics and NOTHING sounds like them. The clarity, bell tone, and this bass looks like it will also sound great. Let's find out... It reminds me a little of my Peavey Cirrus, which is one of the best basses ever made. This bass sounds wonderful ! The EQ is very effective. Sits in the mix well.

Thank you so much! Alembic basses are very unique, I’m sure you enjoy playing them as much as I do. Since gigs slowed down I’ve not had the opportunity to play as much as I’d like but still enjoy playing over some of our recordings. Bass on brother, be well. :)

Thank you very much for making a video on my questions! The confirmation of the pickup design was reassuring, and after finding this I've spent around 3 hours setting my bass up with your guide. I'm seeing improvements, but due to my inexperience and lack of the proper tools, it seems that there's still some issues. I've managed to get the action lower albeit not enough to reach your measurements, so I'll have to get some feeler gauges to accurately get 0.010" relief. After loosening all the strings, then retuning, this rattling appeared on the open E string which wasn't there before, and I think its caused by an over tightening of the truss rod. Overall some more careful tinkering is required and I'll check back with you once I make some progress. Once again, Thanks!
@samatza
@samatza 6 күн бұрын
You're very welcome. When you're testing your setup make sure you plug the bass into an amp. We have a tendency to do it acoustically and we pluck harder than usual to hear the string, you can end up chasing fret rattles that won't be heard in normal playing conditions. Feeler gauges are a great tool, they are not expensive and will help you find your ideal settings. Also my E string setting at 5/64" is quite low, usually 3/32" (6/64") is more widely used. It's a small difference but can add up to better sound depending on your playing style. Let me know how you go and feel free to ask as many questions as you like. :)
@Gnast
@Gnast 4 күн бұрын
@samatza I think I've found the solution to my high fret buzz. I measured relief and action on my squier, which turned out to have extreme relief of 0.019" and action of 5/64 and 2/32 despite playing like a dream for me. I matched these settings with the hybrid ii but still had buzz so I concluded the one difference was that one had flats. After swapping the flats over the higher tension has resulted in exactly the action I wanted without buzz, though the relief is a bit crazy now so I'll adjust it to 0.014. Thank you again for all this help up until now!
@samatza
@samatza Күн бұрын
@@Gnast Yes, the flats will generally have a hex core and are probably stiffer than the rounds. When you are testing this by the way, do it plugged in, I noticed with myself if I pluck hard enough to hear the note I'll get some fret rattle, not so when I'm playing through the amp. I hope that you find your ideal setup, remember to write it all down for reference so you can repeat it later if you change anything. Be well. :)

I just had mine arrive and the E string poles are all sunken inside both pickup covers, I was wondering if that was the same case with yours
@samatza
@samatza 7 күн бұрын
@@Gnast yes, mine is the same. If you look closely you’ll notice the heights are staggered, this is for better string to string balance. The E string is the thickest so the pole pieces are set lowest to compensate. I hope this answers your question. :)
@Gnast
@Gnast 7 күн бұрын
@samatza haha thank you for the reply, I just thought that it was slightly unusual and that at most, the poles would be flush with the cover. Sorry to keep bothering you, but another thing I've noticed is that I can't set the action low enough without horrible buzz on the 12th+ frets. Is this normal for jazz basses? As I could set lower action on a squier p bass and this is my first time owning a jazz
@samatza
@samatza 7 күн бұрын
@@Gnast no bother at all. I don't know your setup, any bass can be set up with a low action if the fret work is good. How low are you going? I usually set the neck relief to 0.010" and 2/32" to 5/64" G string to E string. That's pretty low and very comfortable. How are you setting yours? Neck relief is important because if the bow is too much and you're trying to set the saddles lower at the bridge to compensate you'll bet buzzing in the upper register. Check out my setup video and let me know how you go.

@@markdooley2715 Hi Mark, great question. Usually I add a little bass and low mids but only a small amount. The Stingray has a lot of EQ, if I’m going straight to the console I boost bass and mids sometimes cutting the treble a hair. I favour a fairly round tone for what I do. It’s always great to experiment with EQ and find what works for you. On the mixer these days I tend to cut more than boost. Keep making music, all the best. :)

Sorry to hear about your Elf. They are comparatively expensive around here too, the Gnome on the other hand is priced really well, it's fairly neutral sounding and you can dial in a lot of tones with the EQ. I'm surprised they are still in business. I've been playing bass for over 33 years and never have seen one in a shop or someone using one live (besides when Jason Newsted was playing them). Their prices are outrageous, their website still looks like it's from 1995, they do zero marketing etc. etc. You can get any number of boutique basses that will dominate an Alembic bass for thousands of dollars less. Besides old fuddies like Stanley Clarke, nobody relevant plays these. No young bass player is going to a concert and seeing the bassist with an Alembic (which would maybe make him want to buy one because he bass hero has one). Their demographic buyer is old & dying off and they've done nothing as a company to replenish their "funnel" of customers. 99% of bass players under the age of 30 never heard of this company and if they did & showed any interest in buying one, they'd quickly abort that idea once they see the ridiculous pricing.
@samatza
@samatza Ай бұрын
Yes, prices are sky high right now. I know that in the past they have refused to move manufacturing off shore. Perhaps that's the reason that you don't see many people playing them.
