Think KFI was around my entire life. Dad would listen to it in the car. It comes in ok in Las Vegas in the morning, then fades with the sun. Handle in the morning. Makes the new interesting. Still looking for the keys for the mountain towers..

It was ok. For the price I wouldn’t complain. Most of the use cases would be for somewhat noisy environments like remote broadcasts.

Good evening we just got approved for LPFM station can you recommend the best antenna and transmitter for this class of LPFM to be able to maximize the coverage area. Please help…Thanks
@TheBroadcastEngineer8 күн бұрын
I’ve had good experiences with ERI for antennas and Nautel for transmitters. You’ll have to work with both to find a solution for the ERP for your class of station.

The new KCRW building was a giant step up from the basement on Campus but the feel was very different. However, there was no choice as there just wasn’t any more room on campus. It was a fun and interesting build out too. But in the end they have a great new facility with the tools and technology needed for the changing world of public radio. A great set of engineers to work with too!

It was a really cool facility to tour! I thought the “behind the set” decor outside the studios was very neat. It’s like you’re stepping on set when you enter the studio.

Your cool calm demeanor will make you very valuable in an "unscheduled temporary reduction of ERP". Keep up the wonderful work you do.. 😁🤗👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I exited Bailey Rd off the 15. North side of the freeway, turned to the west on Clark Mountain Road. Followed that around until you hit the ponds. Stay to the right and you’ll see a “public access” gate. It’s closed to keep wildlife out of the mining area.

Is it advantageous to have a degree in EE for broadcast engineering Jobs? There is a two year broadcasting program I can do but wondering if it would be a waste of time.
@TheBroadcastEngineer13 күн бұрын
It doesn’t hurt. Working for a company that contracts with a bunch of broadcasters, it would be beneficial to have that EE degree.

@TheBroadcastEngineer Thanks for Answering! For real I was stuck trying to decide if I should do that 2 year brodcasting program or get the EE degree because of the subject matter and versatility. I want to do both just wanted to see how i could, now I see. Thanks so much 💯.

The broadcasting program will be more geared toward the production and on air side probably. Really where broadcast is heading is into the IT world.

Amazing video and tour! The equipment that public radio has in the USA is incredible (compared to my country, Argentina, where public radio is seen as an "spent" and has not been invested in equipment for quite some time). I dream that one day we will be able to have these standards in our stations. But in the meantime it is enjoyable to see how things work in other places. Thanks for the video!
@lokiva854014 күн бұрын
Remember when broadcast audio processing was something ahead of a transmitter, making compromises for different listener environments and formats while controlling modulation for FCC rules? Now we might question what the statistical mix is of on-air listeners, station or network (NPR, PRI, Pacifica, etc) streams and those via TuneIn, Apple, Google, et al, or refeeds as podcast or video clips of audio original programs, and of those, with what mix of CODECs and streaming parameters? Years ago we may have debated what FCC rules really meant, when Larry Titus started making highly accurate FM modulation monitors, whereas Arno Meyer with his open HazMat drums outside the shop out back (Belar) was mimicing a logical paradox of 47 CFR 73, that purported to have 2% or better absolute accuracy monitors but follow a 6% ballistic overshoot transient standard. And, "reputable" brands like Collins made 310Z2 exciters with LCR filters on stereo generators, with serious ringing just outside 75 kHz deviation limits.... How the world has changed.... But even Music Group has reorganized and shifted operations, long after swallowing up companies with eponymous and interesting founders. Who else has an Orban kazoo, yo-yo, or yellow foam "frisbee" simulating a reel of 1" tape, and recalls the year AES attendees were tossing those up and down from the balcony to ballroom floor at the Waldorf Astoria? Engineers need a sense of humor and play time too. ;-)

Now if only they could get a USEABLE signal here in West L.A. that would be nice., Utterly useless in a moving vehicle and very iffy at home with a good outdoor antenna. I've been complaining about the out of phase signals (out of phase between the boosters and the main site).
@Joe3545u24 күн бұрын
Wonder what KPCC's financial situation is after spending big bucks to be "State of the Art"? WBEZ in Chicago did pretty much the same thing. Recently most of the live and local staff was cut, the HD2 & HD3 channels were stripped of their unique programing and podcasting was eliminated as well with most programing being national NPR originated. Makes you wonder if it makes sense to spend big bucks on the latest equipment if you can't afford a local on air staff to use the facilities.
@harpla123 күн бұрын
Almost all of our equipment was purchased with grant funding. Our portion of the budget is pretty small, news production comes first.

That was a bit harsh! I did find the studios very dark. Do they have windows in any of the studios? Also, and this is a generic comment about most studios in the US: they often look like they are built like corporate offices (furniture, colors, etc) for the bigger ones. The smaller ones look like they are built in someone's living room. On the plus side, the Quasar consoles look nice!
