For minecraft beginners: Putting your boat in lava is totally safe! They just had a mod that didn't let you! It's a common difficulty changer mod and in vanilla, you can fully swim on lava with a boat

The vikings sailed through the rivers dneiper and volga, and traded with constantinople and baghdad, and traveled over the black sea. They had to carry the boats between areas not worthy of sail, and most likely overwintered in these areas before returning to Scandinavia
