'Old Joes has gone Fishing' from Peter Grimes, Op. 33 by Benjamin Britten. (Beat: 7/4)

One of the most affecting & beautiful moments in any of Britten’s operas. He never composed a quartet quite like it that I have heard .

I will never understand the acclaim this dreary piece has gotten over the years. It has all the appeal of a soiled dish towel.

This opera is WAY too UNDER rated. It is a magnificent piece of work. And I LOVE this clip!

This opera is WAY too OVERRATED and I will never understand the acclaim it receives . The so-called music is like rancid vinegar, stinging, sour and angry, devoid of lyricism and even minor snatches of melody. I have been an ardent opera fan for 56 years and mercifully never sat through this, although I was once tortured by attending Death in Venice.

Perhaps not enough rehearsal of this sublime quartet? Britten ended each stanza with beautiful, consonant chords for which the tuning must be rigorously precise. Here: four beautiful voices in search of their notes.

This sublime piece of music is intelligent, innovative, complex, challenging and full of pathos and humanity. Beautifully performed here.

Somehow in the several times I saw Grimes at the Met in the '74 season and again in the'76th, I don't remember hearing this stunningly beautiful quartet so beautifully sung here. I'll be looking forward to it from now on, for sure!

Bravo! The emotional high-point of Peter Grimes in my view. When/where was this production?

The University of Indiana at Bloomington in 2017. The Jacobs School of Music mounts a number of new productions each year as a teaching vehicle and learning experience for its performance students.
