They'll maintain a pace like this for upwards of 10 minutes at a time before slowing to catch their breathes and then restarting fast again. Our typical outings cover roughly 9 miles.

It's nice on snow because it doesn't hurt when you fall. I tried it with rollerblades one summer and, after 3 falls getting road rash on asphalt, I gave up :)

Does that thing steer?
@bpsled
@bpsled 2 ай бұрын
I'm on skis (thus "skijoring"), if that is what you are asking. When we get going fast (as near the end of this video), you'll often see my ski tips come into view as I'm in a ski tuck. Otherwise, Jack & Rudy know left, right, slower, faster and a bunch of other "verbal steering commands" from me :)

Hi there! Just found your channel, and I have a small request if you're taking any! I was wondering if you could make a video(s) involving the dogs at home: like your feeding routine and/or daily routine? I'm curious! Thank you!

Wow, they're ok with dogs on the trail? And freshly groomed? That would never fly at most (any?) nordic sites in Minnesota.

Yes, the nordic center has a few trails allocated for "dogs allowed" (most trails are not, but they do have a few great trails they allow us on).

Are you on cross country skis? Is their lead hooked up to your waist or otherwise?
@bpsled
@bpsled 5 ай бұрын
Yes, cross country skis and, yes, the gangline is attached to a waist belt. The line has a bungee in it to absorb force (lookup "skijoring gangline" in google/etc to see vendors selling them).

My dog would readily pull me on my skateboard. It's interesting that dogs have a seeming instinct to pull their human guardians around. Since they are running, is the instinct to have some exercise? I didn't teach my dog anything, she just happily pulled me along the sidewalk. Very few animals are spending lots of time thinking about running. Horses, it's expected. Dogs pulling sled, skiers, skateboarders - sort of wondering where that came from.
@bpsled
@bpsled 6 ай бұрын
It's definitely a natural instinct for some dog breeds. I didn't have to teach anything to "go" either, just had to teach "stop" in the beginning :)
