Certainly fairly true as regards manufactured products (clothing to computers, for instance), but not true for food and drink. According to the UK Government, around 60% of this is produced here, but most of the rest comes from the EU, and the majority of that comes by ferry, either with driver, or in unaccompanied trailers - figures are available.

Yup - container ships always look worrying when fully laden! But I don't remember one actually capsizing . . . most of their accidents seem to be box loss at sea, or low speed events while in port.

@@rushirushworth Around 20 - 25 is about right for the crew; she'll be here until Thursday, but container ships are rarely completely unloaded, unless they are going into drydock. She'll be unloading import containers for delivery from Felixstowe, maybe some for onward delivery by smaller feeder ships to other UK and continental ports, and load export and empty boxes for other ports. She will make 4 or 5 other European port calls before heading back to the Far East, where she'll make several calls before returning . . .

I'm sure someday it will be full of cheap disposable Chinese garden hoses....
@ShipsandShipping
@ShipsandShipping 14 күн бұрын
Are "cheap disposable garden hoses" even a thing? 🤔 The UK imported £63.6 billion of goods from China in 2021 (13.3% of all goods imports to the UK) and exported £18.8 billion of goods (5.8% of all goods exports from the UK). The main goods import from China in 2021 was machinery and transport equipment (£27.5 billion), primarily office machinery and telecoms and sound equipment, like computers, phones and other electronics. The UK had a £39.1 billion trade deficit with China in 2021, which means we imported more than we exported; we had a £44.8 billion trade deficit in goods which was offset by a £5.7 billion surplus in services.

She's got an induced list caused by the angle of the tow line from her bow, which is in turn caused by being dragged along by the ship while driving away from it an angle. Check the description for a better technical description of indirect towing.

You are wrong. Ships are only required to have a scrubber if they burn high sulphur fuel oil in an ECA. Felixstowe is in an emission control area (ECA). Ships which do not have a scrubber can only burn ultra low-sulphur fuel oil (ULSFO or ULSGO) in an ECA which must be less than 0.1% sulphur. With NOx Tier III engines, to reduce NOx, timing is altered which can lead to higher fuel consumption. Many ships are now fitted with urea plants to reduce NOx, which is water-based. When high-powered diesel engines are running at slow-speed, unburnt fuel can also cause white smoke when the engine runs cold, this appears not to be the case in your video. If, as you say, the smoke was muck-laden, the exhaust gas would be black. Black smoke results from improper combustion and should result in a fine from the port authority. The exhaust fumes are white most likely because of water vapour, possibly from the urea plant. You are welcome to fact-check my comment if you wish, I do not know what engine plant this ship has been fitted with, but I have been a marine engineer on ocean-going ships for the last 45 years.
@ShipsandShipping
@ShipsandShipping 29 күн бұрын
I wouldn't dream of arguing with you! This ship is equipped with a scrubber. It didn't look Iike the scrubber was operating because there didn't seem to be any steam in the exhaust. I understand that this ship was operating on HFO, and the exhaust was typical of the blue exhaust we got up until the introduction of scrubbers. Smelly, cough-inducing stuff.
@mbarker1958
@mbarker1958 29 күн бұрын
@@ShipsandShipping it still looks more like steam to me, I lived in Hamburg near a coal-fired power station with a scrubber, it emitted a constant cloud of white vapour as a result which looked like smoke but is steam
