I just rebuilt a Spotbot. I believe the backwards motion is from the cam timing. Try moving the cam to a different position. Carefully remove the old grey tires off the wheels and fit appropriate o-rings on wheel.

Did you find that it needed a diffuser to keep the brightness down? If so, what diffuser material would you recommend?
@GoodwinsPlace
@GoodwinsPlace 20 күн бұрын
You can adjust the brightness in the software. I prefer without a diffuser so you can see all the pixels, but know others have used perspex either clear or slight tint.

I shorted the display ribbon cable by accident and the music playing just stopped and there was a high pitched, soft buzzing sound so i immediately switched it off. When I leave it plugged in, nothing happens but I can feel the CPU getting quite hot over the heatsink. Any suggestions to try? I really ought to buy a multimeter
@GoodwinsPlace

Sounds like something has blown. You would need a multimeter to check for shorts and see if you can find any fuses, capacitors or possibly faulty power regulator.

Great video mate. I ripped em all off youtube and bunged em on a blu ray. Even ordered a Guyver figure from Japan lol. Manga Video was the shizz back then. I found your video as I was looking for anyone else's description of attempts to repair a faulty Seaward PAT tester of this form factor - there are a number of different models, which look similar externally but with wildly different PCB designs inside - and no-one anywhere has found a schematic in the wild to assist - roll on the Right to Repair movement! I'm an experienced electronics engineer, and your video is a couple of years old but I have a couple of observations for you - Even with your inexperience at this point you're doing a good job with your soldering, much better than the cack-handed efforts of whoever was let loose on it before you got it! Keep learning - you can only get better at repair with increasing knowledge! I'd say this machine had been wet/damp/water-splashed in the past, the moisture leading to the dulling of the solder contacts and creating possible leakage between pins of ICs through corrosion or impurities of damp grime deposited - leading to erratic display behaviour and erratic microcontroller behaviour. It's sadly not unusual for on-site test tools like this that are in fact not waterproof (even though they look ruggedised), to be tossed in a ratty old gear bag in a van, as opposed to being kept dry on the workbench. So your decision to apply flux and reflow dull solder was a good one. It's best to use solderwick to remove as much of the old oxidised old solder as possible, apply new solder, and scrub up with IPA as you did. The two pins they soldered the battery wires onto, were the remains of a 2-pin plastic socket similar to the others on the board - I'm guessing that the previous "repairer" either wrenched the wire/s out of the crimped plug while trying to dismantle the machine, or wrenched the socket plastic off the board still attached to the plug, leaving the pins behind... and/or there was corrosion in the plug (that dull solder on that via suggests this) which ruined it, so they just soldered the wires direct to the remaining pins rather than replacing the socket and recrimping a new plug. In that case, they should have first removed the pins as you did, as the pins' actual plated surfaces may have become oxidised and made a bad solder contact. Oh and those red items are the relays you can hear clicking when it performs the tests - needed to disconnect and reconnect the pins on the IEC and 3-pin sockets in different combinations to check for crossed wiring and to momentarily connect the high voltage generator to the socket pins during insulation testing. Cheers, from New Zealand!

Cheers for the comment, as you say an old video. I'm flying through hdmi repairs and other much more technical items these days - I should get some updated on KZfaq. This machine works still but has some strange behaviour, I need to send it off for calibration but I'll need to spend a bit more time on it first to make sure it's still functioning as intended.

In the same boat cannot find a schematic online for this model, mine has a RIso fault which I think is quite common. I cannot find anything wrong but I appear to have a short somewhere, It is not on any components though so I am worried it might be in the PCB somewhere. Tried the voltage injection method but nothing gets hot and I think that is because the path might be a high current one and so not heating up. I don't have a working one to compare as this does have different voltage references Analogue Ground and Digital Ground so it might be correct. All components seem to be good so I am at a loss what do do next. I have ordered some of the IC's for this and will swap them out to see if the fault clears. The yellow capacitor in the bottom left area of the board the far right one of the four, its positive is shorted to the 2nd mosfets (between the large mosfet and the transistor) middle pin which is connected to ground.

There is a way of testing the tilt audio board on the bench. Just need to add 12vdc to the board and plug in speakers to the audio jack. Then you can test it on the bench.

I know this is 2 years old, but I have bought Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles and the battery is not charging up, I had this before with space ace and returned it, but looking at this video the battery looks very simple to change, is this worth doing myself? or should I just send it back, seems like a proper waste, judging by the box when I got it, the game had been sitting around for quite some time, so looks like the battery has lost the ability to hold a charge or recharge fully. I have some experience with retro console and cartridge refurbishment/cleaning so I am not going in blind so to speak. TIA for any answer.

If you have a multimeter it would be good to disconnect the battery and read the voltage. Honestly it could be something else like the charge controller so not sure if just swapping the battery will resolve it.

Hey, great video. With your technical knowledge, how do you get these to turn on immediately with Power? I have bought 10 of these, all the various games and running them off a single USB hub. ideally I wanted it connected to a smart plug and when activated they all power on so hoping you could do a separate video for loads of people who would also like to know how to do it, or better still if you made a Plug and Play Bypass using JST Connecters etc so we can simply unplug and plug your harness in I know 1000s of Quarter arcade owners that would want that functionality.

Interesting. I'll take a look if they work when powered when the switch is shorted. Alternative is one cable that connects all power switches to a single switch that you could press to turn them all on.

As a kid I bought my first megadrive new from a video library (Choices) in the early 90’s . After a few months I realised my console looked different to everyone else’s and thought it was a fake. I now know it was a PAL Asia console that must have been imported. I was a bit gutted that I sold it years ago so have now ordered another PAL Asia console to replace it, happy days 😊

I have a question since I stumbled your video, so I suspect that this component that has a Toshiba branding on and its round, gets kinda hot when plugged in I can feel it on the component itself and the shield and even on the PCB , I'm using a DC adaptor a 9v 1amp which has good reviews, is the cause of my NES not getting enough voltage? and it powers on but no audio or video, also when there's no game it does the blinking, so would this component be it? I already recap too, and fixed my pins and it is OEM
