Thank you so much for showing two ways. The second one works really well for me. I am trying to find an efficient way for me of combining knit and purl stitches in a row. For an entire row of purl stitches, my favorite is definitely the Portuguese purl.

Cool!👍 Thank you! I think I like your method of making a French knot better than the traditional method where you wrap thread around the needle that I once upon a time knew how to do when embroidering. I always had trouble with those. I'm working on a crocheted version of Van Gogh's The Starry Night picture and need various size French knots for the stars and a refresher to make them since I'd forgotten how. So... again, thank you very much! 🙏 You really helped me out here. 😊 Have a beautiful day!♥️

If you accidentally worked to the end of the ball of yarn, take out a few stitches so you have at least 6" tail.

Thank you so much! I could finish my hat thanks to your great explanation! I actually had trouble with my previous hat with the bind off part, and the tapestry needle. I couldn't figure out how to do this with the magic loop, it seems obvious but when you said you needed to transfer the back half of remaining stitches to the other end of the needle it solved my confusion!

really clear instructions on how to do a three-needle bindoff straight across. is there also a way to do this and still have the sloping shoulders? (I'm fairly new to knitting so maybe you slipped 3 stitches or something at both ends to keep those lower than the center stitches?)

Thank you for your comment. Please sunscreen and share. To bind off a sloped shoulder, use short rows then 3 needle bind off. Searching can help.

I’m so glad this video popped up as suggested. I watched 4-5 other channels videos on how to do this, and none of them stuck. They all worked it what seemed “backwards” to me. You’re the only one I’ve seen working towards yourself so that helped so much!

Wish I had watched this earlier today, I was doing this for the first time and was so busy watching the stitches I was binding off, that the stitches on the back needle slipped off, not all of them but enough that I lost control and had to frog back quite a way. But here you actually say watch the stitches on the back needle.

I was knitting just now and experimenting with purls (I've been doing the Norwegian purl but I really hate doing it), and ended up figuring out the first method you show here, and decided to see if anyone has talked about this. It's nice to see I'm not alone! I hadn't seen anyone showing this method before. After my experiments, my favorite method is using my thumb when the whole row or most of the row is purls, and using my index finger for rib, seed, moss, etc. For a little while I tried ribbing in a way that I actually kept the yarn on my thumb the whole time, even for the knit stitches, and it worked just fine otherwise but put too much strain on my wrist. It was fun to play around, though! I find when I'm knitting either plain flat stockinette or a large stretch of ribbing I really need to find ways to change things up occasionally hahah

I taught myself to knit and I’ve since learned I do things a little “strange”… purling with my thumb is one! But I find it a lot easier to control the tension and keep the yarn from slipping off the needle that way. I’m glad it’s not unheard of, at least!
