the ROM's creator utilizes game features in a sadistic, but clever way. by design of these levels, mario's health isn't design to punish the player, rather to be used sparingly in puzzles. notice how some of the parts with lava such as 43:30, (the TAS does a marvelous job navigating this part, of course) there's just enough coins to refill mario's health as he hops around the pads, and since lava does 3 damage, red coins only fill 2. therefore the player has to economize their health meter in such a careful way to fulfill the 8 coin star.
