i think the problem is because of your age you dont really have a frame of reference to fully understand the global context of the film, and im genuinely not trying to insult you here, just being helpful ...so, back in the late 80s/early 90s we were still undergoing 'digitisation' in all forms...computers, technology, music formats...it was a different world, and there were obviously fears about where this would lead, much like Bladerunner did with androids/replicants...and Lawnmower man touched on this idea, so the fx were pretty groundbreaking, but the idea was too, it was just done in a very 1980s, zany, sensationalist way, which also requires some context to understand. Hope this helps pal!

@@SheaRants even to me it seems really dated pal, some things age better than others but its surprisingly hard to predict....something like Predator which was also 80s and contains FX has aged amazingly well, even much earlier 'genre' pieces like Suspiria or Bladerunner have aged better than mower man...its definitely not in their league to be honest. Anyways, great channel!!

The directors cut is better in my opinion, but the film is definitely a product of it's time, and it had some pretty innovative use of cgi, as well as dipping it's toes into techno horror, in a similar way to films like videodrome, or maybe even scanners possibly.

1). Stephen King denounced TheShining. If StephenKing DOESN'T denounce your movie, it's prolly garbage. It's a bit rich StephpenKing commenting on movies, given he directed MaximumOverdrive. If Stephen is going to approve terrible adaptions like TheLangoliers and TheNightFlyer, he has no right to whine about TheLawnmowerMan. Try watching SleepWalkers if you want to see King write something DESIGNED to be a film. It's a bit weird. 2). You expected a movie about a half-man, half-lawn-mower? Sheesh. What do you think StarMan is about? What do you think OmegaMan is about? How do you feel about TheRunningMan only running once or twice and spending the rest of his time playing a game-show? (TheRunningMan movie is a really fun StephenKing adaptation, but it's not horror.) 3). The CGI in this movie was astounding _for it's day._ Do you also look at ground-breaking movies like ThiefOfBagdad, and not understand that no-one had ever seen anything like it at the time? It took imagination and vision to create, coz no-one had ever seen stuff like that before... and the reason you're so blahzay about it is coz that sort of imagery captured our imaginations, and became part of the cultural zeitgeist. Keep in mind that the arcade-game "STUN Runner" came out in 1989 and exploded our brains, so too see the flying scene in LawnMowerman with those gnashing metal teeth... that was frigging AMAZE-BALLS! That was THE FUTURE! 4). TheLawnmowerMan short story (in the book) is very weird and different to the movie, but it's not "bad". StephenKing used to say that his novels like TheStand and "IT" are commitments, like marriage that take time and effort to get anything from, whilst his short-stories are like a one-night-stand. They only last a short time, are low-effort (to read) and really don't mean much, but it's just meant to provide a quick thrill. Of all the short stories in NightShift, I only remember TheLawnmowerMan and QuittersInc. They made long-lasting impressions for something that's only a few pages, coz they're just so strange. Here's an olive-branch. You're young, and I'm old, and it was interesting to hear your opinions. It's great that you're on KZfaq expressing your opinions, and drawing attention to classic movies. I hope negative comments will not dissuade you. I just urge you to look at special effect in-context for the era it was made. If you like old movies with bits of CGI, you might like Tron(1982) and ElectricDreams(1984). We didn't get a full-length CGI film till ToyStory(1995) and FinalFantasyTheSpiritsWithin(2001) was the first "photo-realistic" CGI film... which is weird and boring, but visually interesting. Have you heard of StephenKing's non-fiction books like DanseMacabre and OnWriting? I haven't read them for 35 years, but I really liked them back-in-the-day. If you're doing a study of King, they might be handy.

I definelty get was you said I can definelty see how the effects in this film were groundbreaking for its time and I definelty agree with most of the points you made stephen king is definelty not the peak of quality especially with maximum overdrive (that was rough). And quitters inc is defienlty a great story however this one just didn't click with me as much as that and some of the other ones. And don't worry comments don't get to me and I hope my video didn't upset you in any way. I still have the sequel to talk about aswell and i may rewatch this befote that and i might lke it more then like I find often happens, until then thanks again for checking out the video!

Hopefully you annoy someone though, or you're not doin youtube right ;) Despite being a fan of the first movie, I didn't even know there was a sequel, so I don't hold much hope for it. I say watch JohnnyMnemonic instead. That's a cool futuristic movie from the same era (and it's especially good in black'n'white, if you can find that version)... but don't listen to me. I found the movie similar to the short story "Flowers For Algernon" (which was based on real but less radical experiments) with Jobes sadness and frustration when he realises that most of his friends mostly like him out of amusement or sympathy. Im the movie this turns to rage with the over the top and bad CGI but it does keep the idea that being the smartest person in the world would be very lonely and probably lead to violence - in a similarly way to the Supers in The Boys. It's not a very good movie but it does make a point.

This was not crap.... So you definitely get a thumbs down. This was a favorite of mine. It was called Lawnmower Man because Jobe mowed lawns for a guy that treated Jobe nice. He spared the man from his wrath. Apperantly you need to rewatch the movie because you do not understand the plot.

The art the clown one I bought from an artist at comic con who was kind enough to sign it and the michael one and many of the smaller posters on that side Were a gift from my parents so I'm not sure
