Hi Morgan, I got my first LP about 55 years ago (and I still have it), and I love to see young people loving vinyl. That's very good advice for beginners, who are faced with so many questions (and some very poor equipment choices). The LP60 turntable really does make a very good entry point, and I think its big selling point is the pickup cartridge it comes with... it's way better than it deserves to be at the price, and can hold its own in far more expensive turntables. You explain things well too, and I noticed how nicely you did your editing. Keep up the good work!

Good video. Thanks. I want to bring attention to a model that most people aren't aware of: Crosley C3. It's more of an "audiophile style" turntable that sells for as little as $100 online, but the sound quality is especially good, a big step up from a lot of turntables that cost $250 and less. It's manual though with no Bluetooth option. I got one, really liked it, and passed it on to someone who needed a replacement for their broken vintage turntable. I use a vintage turntable for my own regular listening.

You did say this already, but I wanted to emphasize this point: would be a shame to buy a crappy record player that could actually ruin your records. When I was a kid I had one of those and eventually led me to get rid of all my records! So I am no expert in records but I am hesitant to encourage people to buy them. Perhaps get into digital audio first, and move into records slowly, only if you are sure you know what you are doing?! Love to see young people who like audio gear! Good job!
@MorganBrandon
@MorganBrandon 2 күн бұрын
Oh no, yeah avoid lower quality suitcase record players if you can. I was heavily into digital listening/streaming before I got into vinyl. I like what you said about getting into records slowly. I think that’ll help young people who are unsure or want to start small to try out the hobby first before going deeper.

The phono preamp has a critical function - the record is cut with a standard RIAA equalization - the bass would be too big (physically) and the grooves would take up a lot of space, and records would only be able to play much shorter times - so the RIAA standard is to cut the bass loudness in half. Treble has the opposite challenge - the grooves would be so small that they would wear out very quickly - so the RIAA equalization doubles the volume of the treble. The phono preamp has to take the signal from the cartridge, and cut the treble in half, and double the bass - so it sounds like it did in the master recording. As you might imagine, the phono preamp can have a better quality design, or it can be built to a price point, and not do this RIAA equalization as well.

I used a convection oven with an already trashed LP to see its warping point: it's between 140-150 F or about 60-65 C. I did not keep going to its melting point! Since a closed car in sunlight can easily reach 140 F here in Phoenix, I make Zia Records the last stop before going home.
@MorganBrandon
@MorganBrandon 3 күн бұрын
That’s smart! I avoid record shopping in the heat if I can’t get the records indoors right away. For me in the Chicago area it doesn’t get nearly as hot as Phoenix, but record stores are always my last or only stop in the summer. Phoenix is crazy hot I can’t imagine 140° heat in a car 😧
