I use ox gall liquid added to my water to prewet an area in preparation for wet-in-wet painting. I live in an arid climate and the water dries too quickly. Adding this in allows me to work a little longer. I really like it.

I have use the lifting preparation a lot in my portraits. It's wonderfully helpful. I have the iridescent medium by Winser & Newton too. Never used it. Lol. Just a suggestion....the watercolor paint with extra added ox-Gall is not going to flow by adding it wet onto dry paper. Ox gall or synthetic versions has to be put on wet into wet or with plenty of extra water. If it's not wet enough with water it doesn't work. Ox gall works with water. It doesn't replace it. And Granulation shows best with more water also because its the water that activates the unresolved pigments. Thanks for sharing!

I am wondering if using a watercolour paper block. It will eliminate warping, buckling, and pooling of the water. There is no extra work of stapling down your paper or preparing it with stretching.
@shelleypriorfineart8 күн бұрын
@@snuuby5468 whether it’s a block or stretched paper, there will still be buckling when there’s a lot of wet on the paper. It’s cotton and very absorbent. It expands and has nowhere to go so it buckles, until it dries flat again (shrinks). Smaller blocks are convenient and effective but quite expensive. My personal preference is still stapling because I like the paper texture in full sheets (slightly different than blocks and pads). I can cut to size or work 22x30”. Staples are more reliable whereas blocks sometimes become detached from the glued edges. Finally, the blocks are not stretched paper (pre-shrunk). When I staple wet paper it shrinks and is tight as a drum. My paintings are perfectly flat and ready to frame once fully dry (24 hours).

@shelleypriorfineart9 күн бұрын
@@wesmcclaskie3442 I let my paints dry out between painting sessions. I simply add a generous amount of water to my colours about 10 minutes before I start again. This softens them up considerably. Don’t leave the lid on your moist paint. Mold can form.

Thank you for this great tutorial! I love the negative painting of the almost back lit cloud edges. I am wondering if paper wetness determines the soft edge of the cloud shadows? Wet Arches paper left to sit 4 minutes and application of watery consistency of pigment, still leaves me with hard edges in the cloud shadows. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Your cloud shadow edges are beautifully dispersed. Any advice on the paper wetness? Thanks.
@shelleypriorfineart9 күн бұрын
@@bls924 Thank you. Timing is what you need to watch. Wet the paper and it will be glossy. Wait long enough for only some of the water to absorb into the paper but a satin or semi-gloss shine still remains on the paper. That’s a great time to apply your colour but not too watery. When the shine disappears, don’t continue painting or you will have hard edges (sometimes that IS what you want). Just let everything dry fully and repeat the process.
@shelleypriorfineart9 күн бұрын
@@bls924 you may be confusing the stretch process with the painting process. To stretch before you paint, prepare your paper by soaking 3-4 minutes. Staple immediately to a sturdy board and let dry. I highly recommend 100% cotton paper.
@bls9249 күн бұрын
Thanks for the extra information! I'm using Arches that has been taped to a board. I think, as you suggest, timing is the issue. I will practice it more, and I can't wait for that magic moment when it finally clicks in...... that and water/pigment control :-) Love your tutorials!
