I'm afraid your explanation of the joint method isn't quite accurate. Looking at Ellen, Jack, and Allison establishes that eating beef might be sufficient to be sick (the method of agreement), but it shows a similar possibility for eating seafood. To narrow it down to the beef, you need to employ the method of difference, which happens if you compare the cases of Jack and "You," since these are the only two that differ with respect to the independent variable and are similar with respect to all the possible causes. Simply noting that "You" didn't eat beef and didn't get sick doesn't quite illustrate the application of difference. Also, while your explanation of residues is explanatory, it's not exactly an example of a causal relationship.

Some of these are straight up wrong. Electrocution is not a sufficient condition for death. People can survive electrocution. Being electrocuted is not enough on its own to conclude that a person is going to die as a result. Terrible example.

I'll one-up the commenters saying this explained Mill's Methods more effectively than a full-on lecture. This video explained Mill's Methods better than the youtube video my instructor provided that is literally a computer-generated audio of a Wiki article. It is deplorable that a university degree is now the lowest common denominator and that I have to waste my precious time and money on an "education" like that just so I can daydream about buying a house someday.

Nice video Mr. FitzGerald I wish all CUNY professors Teaching Logic would take your videos to help students. I struggled a lot in this class that I lost 100% interest in it. I believe you have the charisma an a good teaching method.

My God this video is good Edit: I would like to add that the watchmaker argument applies the logic derived from *inside* the universe to the universe as a whole when in truth, we know nothing about the behavior of universes as a whole or if they even have a behavior.

Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations is in the public domain and can be downloaded from Project Gutenberg and searched. The printed book can cost you $15 and take a lot of effort to search. Has Smith's "Invisible Hand" been used as a propaganda tool for decades since most people would never read WoN? Smith used the word 'invisible' six times but only once as "invisible hand". It is really curious that we hear about the 'invisible hand' so much. Smith used the word 'education' EIGHTY TIMES. We are not told about that. Search for "and account" and you will find multiple instances of "read, write, and account", not "read, write and arithmetic". Double entry accounting was more than 300 years old when Smith wrote Wealth of Nations, but 50% of Brits were illiterate and public schools did not exist in 1776. The United States could have made accounting/finance mandatory in the schools since Sputnik. Wouldn't that have helped everyone best serve their own self interest? But we do not hear the people who propagandize us about the "invisible hand" advocating mandatory accounting because that might make their invisible rip-offs more difficult. Adam Smith never used the word 'depreciation' in WoN. He mentioned paper money being depreciated one time. Marx wrote about 'depreciation' 35 times in Das Kapital, sometimes regarding the depreciation of machines and sometimes of money. Marx even mentioned Adam Smith 130 times though not much about education. Consumers did not buy automobiles, air conditioners, televisions and microwave ovens before 1885. Marx died in 1883. But it's OK! Our brilliant economists do not talk about the depreciation of under engineered consumer trash today either. Every time you buy a replacement the purchase is added to GDP. What about NDP? Oh sorry, when do you ever hear an economist explain NDP? That's OK too, they only depreciate the Capital Goods and ignore the depreciation of consumer junk anyway. Wealth of Nations has probably been in the public domain for a very long time but cheap computing did not make it available in Project Gutenberg until 3/17/2001. Milton Friedman died in 2006. Was Friedman giving us the straight dope on economics or treating us like a bunch of dopes for decades?

What an acute summary of modern world events relating to the middle east! If I were to add, I would suggest including some info on China and Russia in the next edition of this video. US has engaged in a cold war with China for a while now and it has become more and more intense. Another area of focus would be Russia and Ukraine. All in all, the history of the world never stop being boring and I think learning of it, if only a tiny bit, can help future generations think rationally instead of reacting emotionally to current events.

Wonderful suggestion. Maybe you'll take it from here -- I'm now retired. Looking forward to seeing some quality work, particularly with respect to Russia and China, vis-a-vis recent developments. Best wishes! -- Dr. FitzGerald

It seems to me that Mill's first approach, the method of agreement, is not satisfactory if taken as explained in this video. For is there not the possibility that *all* the food in the restaurant has caused illness? I think this option can only be excluded if someone did not eat the seafood and if someone else only ate the seafood. The hidden assumption in this video then, is that only one dish has caused illness... Update: this is covered by the caveats at the end of the video. Would've loved to have seen them pointed out at the beginning, or used as an thinking exercise.
