I remember once I was in a high level dungeon around the time Stormblood was the latest patch, I think Kugane castle. I asked the tank why they kept pulling out of my Doton, and they had no idea what that was. I said “The spinning dirt pile???” And they said they thought that was a new AOE. I responded, “My god, how have you gotten that far and never seen a ninja throw down a Doton????” I have had mentor since it became a thing and now I am just numb to the stupid LOL.

I love the little "Enabling bad play" quips here and there. Sometimes the best way to learn that you've done something wrong is to be sat down and forced to acknowledge that you're dead. And chances are, if 7/8 other players aren't, it's not the healer's fault lol.

6:52: I started last year as a WAR but as someone who's DPS main is NIN, it kills me seeing that in dungeons and alliance raids. I haven't even beaten Stormblood yet and I'm still seeing that STD(Single Target Doton) everywhere. Least I have a new idea for a macro🤷 Edit: 10:14 - this is why i single pull that specific section

There ought to be a big flashing red sign that says "THIS CONTENT IS OPTIONAL AND EXTREMELY DIFFICULT" whenever you queue for your first extreme trial. Also I swear I have never done Nabriales in one try ever in my 2,000 hours. Even if I mention before the fight to save the LB, DPS sees three shiny bars and goes "ook"

Worth mentioning I think that a lot of this stuff is either counter-intuitive or holdovers from old knowledge. -We're given the cure 1 etc, why the hell isnt it useful or just turned into an upgrade since the meta is clearly to never use them currently? -Doton USED to be a single target gain at one point, ancient knowledge from a bygone age Frankly SE could do a lot for the health of the game simply by upgrading/updating the tutorial systems from their current near-worthless implementation. Anyone who has played this game even in NORMAL content (let alone savage/ult/etc) knows there's a massive variance to the skill level of the player base. Mentors are just crowd funded teachers essentially, but even that falls flat on its face because of human nature creating the brand of mentors we all know and love to hate. With no system to "punish" the bad mentors and all of the reward systems being simple goal-based handouts that have no capacity for discernment (complete 2000 mentor roulettes, acquire 3000 commendations, etc), people inevitably do what they always do: game the system. "How do I get X thing with the least amount of effort/time spent?" Mentorship is something I looked at as a sprout with starry eyes as "Wow, that's so cool! One day when I'm good enough at the game and have enough of a broad knowledgebase, I want to do that too!" Coming to terms with the ugly truth of things wasn't easy, and it still makes me quite bitter, but I decided to put the stupid burger king crown on anyway after witnessing a lot of the mentor memes firsthand as I leveled every class to max, and eventually got the full crown. I still have to shake my head sadly every time I hear "Wow, an actual good mentor" as if I'm some sort of endangered species, but I also take a bitter sort of pride in it as well, doing something I still believe in despite all the """""""Mentors""""""" I have to share elbow space with and sometimes take friendly fire for just being associated with.

If someone is being a mentor just for a mount then they shouldn't be a mentor. There shouldn't even be those rewards for being a mentor, would save a lot of frustration. Sure there would be tons less mentors, and bunch more failed trials and etc but perhaps some sprouts would start to look up tactics when the timer is going under 20 and so on would prepare them for harder content as well. And the mentors that did stay would be there because they like helping and perhaps be less frustrated when finding bad players

Ah, the best kind of Mentor One that wants to snap the necks of his students and/or throw them into oncoming Chocobos Jokes aside, It's nice to see a mentor that will callout the bullshit and give out the praise Honestly a Mix of Firm and respectful are what make amazing mentors. Wear that crown with pride. ( I would also like to apologize if I've ever been a massive derp in a duty♥)

Ngl, still a sprout and I usually watch a video before entering trials to at least somewhat understand the mechanics. While sometimes mentors are great and try to help by explaining mechanics, you often encounter those that really just wanna get through this shit and rush and don't explain anything until maybe the third wipe or so. I've run dungeons with mentors who rushed so much our group was wiped due to them (healer who wanted our tank to pully everything and rfused to heal) and I've had mentors who explained really well and saved a group who otherwise wouldn't have made it at all, it's really 50/50. At this point I'm a little unsure what a mentor even truly does; I mean, like, isn't it their job to help out noobs like me and explain stuff? And I don't mean the basics like dodging AOEs but more specific stuff. On the other hand I get that it's really annoying if you have to run stuff that might feel really easy to you over and over again but that's kind of what you're signing up for if you choose to become a mentor, right? And I really don't mean to insult any mentor out there, I'm just genuinely unsure where to draw the line between what a mentor has to do/explain or what I can expect of a mentor.

That's the problem with the mentor system really, the bar for entry is very low and the astrope mount means a lot of "mentors" are in it for the wrong reasons instead of helping people as the roulette or system was intended. There are a lot of bad apples who treat it as a mount grind and leave duties they don't like, or behave like trash despite not being very competent themselves. Novice Network is also a cesspool of fake mentors giving terrible advice to new players because they don't know the game well, but they think they're hot shit to be dispensing (incorrect) advice The identity or proper role of the Mentor has been reduced to a joke in FFXIV for the most part, but idk, when I do mentor I try and help people to the best of my ability at least within the spirit of the job. Everything else that happens is just bonus content ;)
