The Essanee is pronounced “S an E”, which was a movie theater, but has been converted to live performances, hence Broadway on the Bayou. The summer I painted the mural in the Steamboat pavilion, the skateboard practice area in the park was closed for repairs. The city lifted the ban on skateboarding in the pavilion, so I included the kids skateboarding on the side of the Essanee in the mural. They were terrific and gave me all kinds of encouragement. I should also say that the local Girl Scouts arranged for the mural and offered tons of ideas as the mural evolved. The Berry is a colorful city with energetic, happy, creative people, most of which are living life to the fullest.

I appreciate the work you've done to create this video! I live near Magnolia Mound, and I have visited it multiple times in the past two years. I'm sorry to say that compared to other plantations in Louisiana, they do a terrible job of incorporating the history of slavery into the story of the site. Public records show that hundreds of people were enslaved there over the years when it was operational, including at least one family that continued in peonage (debt servitude) for 30 years after the Civil War. That aspect of Magnolia Mound's history should be part of the story the curators tell. Why only focus narrowly on the history of just one of the families that owned it? Why not name and honor those who were enslaved there as well?

Abdala's history. www.stlandrynow.com/local-area-history/20836/ The Abdalas were originally from Lebanon. Brother's in Lafayette was opened years before Abdala's closed and is owned by one of the Abdala family members. It is still in business. Lafayette's Christmas parade was started by the Abdala family and was as big as a Mardi Gras parade. Everyone in Lafayette and neighboring parishes remembers that parade. Santa rode in the last float and the elves threw candy to the crowds. Wormser is a New Iberia family. They opened another store in Lafayette much later than the one in New Iberia. Shadows on the Teche deserves a mention because the house was donated to the public by the last heir to the home and has never been altered since it was built. Main street in New Iberia is a Spanish military road that was built to connect the Attakapas Parish, now St Landry Parish, to New Iberia which allowed the Spanish government in the French Quarter to communicate with those outposts during the time when Louisiana was a Spanish colony. Louisiana's Spanish Colonial Period was from 1762 to 1803. A few months after it was ceded to France they sold it to The United States.
