Why can’t they bring back preheat fluorescent lights? They’re much more interesting and not that much inefficient than LEDs, unless if it’s a large commercial building and the lights are being used for more than 8 hours a day.

In cold it's a normal condition for the fluorescent tube to not start up directly. It is the reason why it has filaments on both ends and in cold they turn on first to heat up the gas inside. Once the gas is heated, it starts to be ignited and lights up

I have collected fluorescent lightbulbs for over 54 years. That would be so much fun to see that in person but I live in Dubuque Iowa and I have no way to get there. That is totally awesome preheat forever.

Note: Since making this video, I've learned that the blue-green color is very much normal for these RF tubes, which also get significantly dimmer with use.

Or maybe replace a resistor. It looks like a resistor burned out, causing the rheostat to draw more current, which then causes it to not slow down much.

I recently got two Harbor Breeze Builder’s Series and one of them was like the first Concord Decorama, except that it did work on two speeds, high and medium. High was much slower than low on your Decorama, and medium was extremely slow too. I replaced the capacitor and it now works perfectly.

Ugh those T8 troffers on the basement ceiling are so ugly!Saw your LG post. That sure was a good riddance! I dislike troffers being surface mounted rather than in a drop ceiling. I just think the part that goes in the ceiling is so ugly, especially when it is angled like that! Even worse when they have those holes that let the light out like that! At least the ones you installed are preheat. The one in the laundry room is also OK in my opinion because it has a cover around it.

I like learning more about these rare lamps when I randomly come across videos like this one you shared with us Nick. Those fittings in themselves I see as artifacts of lighting history, no matter the scope of it's own duration of time in existence in service.

that is awesome. You have some pretty neat fixtures there, I can never find anything like that. any vintage fluorescent lights that I ever find are stupidly expensive because they are "retro" and "industrial" and most of the time people have "upgraded" them to LEDs and ripped out the ballast which makes them garbage anyway. the only ones that I have ever found that are truly vintage came out of abandoned buildings.
@nicksfans2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I got super lucky with these. Most of the others came from Craigslist/Marketplace or other collectors. I did manage to save 11 halfpipers from a building remodel a couple of years ago.
