I have a rooster also he was supposed to be a hen but he turned out to be a rooster. He’s a Rhode Island red and he is not friendly, but he’s a beautiful bird and he does what roosters are supposed to do. He looks out for his hens. he’s a guard chicken and he would probably fight to the death to protect his girls. He has pecked me really hard couple times, and he’s come at me so I never let my guard down, but I expect that of him.

I’m a new chicken owner also I’ve had them over a year now and I’ve learned a lot. I agree with you the sex link chickens are so friendly and I love them. I have a black sex link hen and she’s so friendly. My second favorite turned out to be an Easter egg she will let me pick her up. She’s friendly. She won’t run from me I this year got a Prairie Bluebell and the chicken literally thinks I’m her mother. She follows me all over the place. I can pick her up. she runs to me when she scared.

Not new to keeping a small flock in suburbia but I am always looking for new info and tips, so thanks for the Video. While you can get by pretty cheap on a coop/hen house, investing in a higher end set up is so worth the added cost especially if you cant free range! I spent about $1200.00 on a set up that gave my flock of Hens about 15 sqft per a bird and it was probably the best move I have ever made! Instead of buying 50lbs of fed, I am mixing my own feed at about 20-25% protein and have found it more cost efficient. Im keeping Speckled Sussex currently but have had RIR's and PBR's in the past.

I love hearing how others do it, and I definitely see what you mean if your flock is spending a good chunk of their time in the coop. It would be worth it to invest in it. I just know that not everyone has the money to do that, I wouldn't want not being able to spend that kind of money on an enclosure to deter them from owning chickens if they wanted to. But your setup sounds wonderful!!

Try bantams. I have 3 boys that are sweet. I keep the ones that want the human interaction, the ones that want to be held and loved on. I have my little boy that pecks my clothes to pick him up and give him some snuggles. They generally are nicer breed. Like I’m touching babies constantly with the moms and I have no issues either. Having a friendlier chicken breed really makes you love having them more. Smaller and kinder, people like them bc they are more of pets

Been raising backyard chickens for over twenty years. Hardware cloth is always better than chicken wire. Build Fort Knox to keep predators out. Make sure the chickens are locked up in there coop ever night. Make the run area as big as possible and have a top on it to protect from the rain/snow. Once you have Chickens, the predators suddenly show up. Don't leave food out at night. Hawks, Owls, fox, raccoons, possums, rats, mice, coyote, bobcats as well as wild dogs will show up if your chickens are not kept safe. Make a composting area in there run and fill it with wood chips, leaves, grass clippings, kitchen scraps......the chickens will break it all down and make some wonderful compost to add to your veggie gardens.

I am pretty sure it’s stress. We live in a very hot climate where the real feel gets upwards of 117 in the heat of the summer. I wet the ground, switch out water for ice water a few times during the day, and keep a fan running in their open air coop, but they still got sick. They haven’t been getting sick now with the temps down and I’m hoping with giving them extra vitamins this summer, they’ll be fine.

Why do your chickens keep getting respiratory issues? What is causing it?! I'm getting my first 4 chickens this month!
@Deeplyrootedhome
@Deeplyrootedhome 4 ай бұрын
We honestly don't know why they had the issues. Some chickens are just more sensitive than others. It was the height of the summer heat when it happened, so possibly the stress of the super high temps lowered their immune system. We only had two that got sick. Chickens in general have extremely sensitive respiratory systems, so it is very important to catch it early if they are having issues and support their systems with the vetRX and vitamins. Even then, they do just sometimes die. Those first few loses are very hard.

@Deeplyrootedhome
@Deeplyrootedhome 4 ай бұрын
Overcrowding was the big one. We lost a few chicks because we tried to keep 15 chicks in a brooder that I thought was big enough. Now I don't do more than 6 chicks at a time. You can do more if you have a larger space available. Just make sure to keep it clean and have a large enough brooder plate. Also over complicating it. The chicken groups on FB are helpful, but everyone has a different way of doing it and there are many "right ways" to raise chickens. Gather information, but know that your chickens will still surprise you and while they can be fragile in some ways, it isn't that hard to care for them. I think I said this in the video, but if they start sneezing, treat them. Don't wait to make sure. VetRX on the comb and wattles and vitamins in their water. It doesn't hurt anything and if you catch things early on, it is significantly less likely that it will turn into something bad. Delaying in treating is what caused us to lose those two hens last year.

Organic , pasture raised eggs in Kroger were $10/dozen yesterday
@Deeplyrootedhome
@Deeplyrootedhome 4 ай бұрын
They are about $7-8 in our area. I don't feel comfortable charging that much since we don't feed organic feed to our chickens, and while they are "pastured" in a way, it is still only our backyard. We do throw all of the weeds from the garden and the woods behind the house over the fence for them to give them more variety in their diet, plus plenty of scraps and bugs, but I feel like their egg quality is probably still not as good as chickens who are truly pastured.

@Deeplyrootedhome
@Deeplyrootedhome 5 ай бұрын
No problem! Simple list: terra vet 200, nutridrench, vetRX, vitamin B12. Explanations below. 😊 The antibiotic is a general antibiotic that covers most chicken illnesses. It is Terra vet (Oxytetracycline). Most illnesses you encounter with chickens will be respiratory related, which is what this treats. We save this exclusively for dire situations. I try not to give my birds antibiotics unnecessarily. I have only used it once. You can’t get these at tractor supply anymore, but our mom and pop feed store still carries them. Vet RX is like chicken Vicks. It has essential oils in it like eucalyptus that help clear the airway. You apply it topically, just like you would Vicks. A few drops on your fingers and rub it onto their waddles, comb, nostrils, and under the wings. This is my go to as soon as someone starts sneezing more than a couple of times. Nutridrench (multivitamin) and Vitamin B12 are supportive vitamins. They are great if someone in the flock has the sniffles or if the temps are stressful. I tend to make a cocktail in their 1/2 gallon waterer with a dropper full of nutridrench, 1/2 oz B12, and a tsp of apple cider vinegar (additional probiotics). I also do this cocktail every few days when I have a broody hen to support her body since she isn’t getting out and caring for herself as well as the others.

Good video, with the amount of chickens you have I imagine you're getting over 100 eggs a month for that 30$ price on the feed and it's better than store bought eggs!
@Deeplyrootedhome
@Deeplyrootedhome 5 ай бұрын
So, at the moment we are turning a profit on our chickens because it is ideal temps and everyone is still pretty young in our flock. But you do have to keep in mind that they will drop to laying about every other day or every 3 days in the summer because of the heat and they can almost stop completely in the winter. Even with being fairly young, we were only getting 4 eggs a day most days this winter, which was barely enough to cover our family. Then add on if anyone goes broody during that time and we can lose upwards of 7 eggs a week for 9-10 weeks. I am keeping a ledger of what I sell versus expenses throughout the year and plan to do a full update about cost later in the year. With what we price our eggs at and the cost of feed, we have to sell at least 5 dozen a month to offset their cost. We are in prime laying season, so I’m selling about 4 dozen a week. So I do believe these good laying months will likely offset the months we can’t sell. At least that’s the goal! 😊

@@Deeplyrootedhome They certainly don't need to be free or profitable monetarily to be giving your family great value.
