Easy, have your pullets live in the same coop as your hens but have them separated by a screen. They will live together but unable to be touched by the hens, in a month remove the screen and they will be fine.

Great video. Watching this from Australia and loving your sense of humor. About to get some ISA hybrids today for our backyard coop (if I can finish building it today!). Thanks for your information and all the best with your business! :)

You have no clue how to hold a chicken properly, and you're stressing them out. Bend your elbow with your middle finger between their hind legs. If they stress out, tuck their head under your arm near your elbow until they calm down _Building a coop and watching a few videos doesn't make you an expert._ Educate yourself before keeping animals - at least give your kid that to respect about you since you obviously lost testosterone living in Libcity New Jersey

A novice looking for breeds for the backyard should NEVER choose production birds. Along with the high production comes issues with the reproductive tract: Egg Bound, Egg Peritonitis, etc. The backyard farmer can compromise for the health of the girls.

We are picking up 100 chicks, how big should the circle be for that many?
@Taimur1476 жыл бұрын
I have 20 chicks almost 3 days old. I already have 9 months old chicken flock. What should i do? Should i merge chicks with the flock? or place them separately. Here in Islamabad (Pakistan) temperature is about 22'c and my chickens and chicks are on the top floor room. Room is covered and fully isolated. Should i still have to make light a night time for chicks?
@cj5976 жыл бұрын
Taimur Shahzad your chicks still need heat day and night at least until they are 5 wks. I would wait a fortnight before integrating them. Please read the articles on backyard chickens for integration.

charlie and what about 9 months old chickens.. will they kill the chicks?
@Taimur1476 жыл бұрын
charlie i dont have any heat lamps. 2 of them died.
@cj5976 жыл бұрын
Taimur Shahzad they need heat. You will have to buy a heat lamp or heat plate or DIY a mama heating pad, 22c is too cold, their growth will be severely stunted if they don’t all die. They should not be integrated for at least two weeks yet. You will need to make a smaller pen in your run and let the older ones get used to them, after two weeks, you can let them out.

What happened to your roosters tail feathers?!
@sadiethegoldenservicedog55816 жыл бұрын
What breed is the colorful rooster with lots of feathers? I know quite a bit about chickens cause I have barred rocks, a heritage Rhode Island Red, golden comets, a black copper Maran (rooster), Easter eggers, a lavender English Orpington, a blue laced red Wyandotte, a golden laced Wyandotte, an isa brown etc.
@fingegotmilk14656 жыл бұрын
It depends on what set up you have for your chicken pen/run when it comes to releasing chicks with the rest of the flock. Personally, I have a brooder coop, with an enclosed run where I put my chicks when they're a week old, or when they start growing feathers. Mine were with the flock at 5 weeks, and after a few chasing, things settled down. Today, my pullets and cockerel are happily roaming with the flock at 10 weeks of age.

i am a young new chicken farmer and I got my chicks at a local feeding store and in April I got 6 chicks and today I got 8 more is it ok to leave the older chicks with new chicks... I worry cause the little bigger ones do peck at the new medium chicks... I did separate the fluff chicks in a different cage tho cause I worry they get picked on...
@victoryfarm7 жыл бұрын
Since you have no adult chickens that you will be eventually integrating this brood with, I think you should be okay. I would keep them isolated for about three to five days before mixing them -- but that really depends on how old they were when you brought them home. If they were already eating out of a feeder without a problem you should be good to go.

My barred rock was very docile and she would sit in my lap and let me pet her. I guess it's all about how you raise them
@victoryfarm7 жыл бұрын
That's very true. Any bird can be socialized and in the years since this video was made we noticed as much behavioral variation between different hatcheries as the different breeds. We purposefully tried not to socialize our birds since that seemed to give them a better chance against the predators.
@angryagain687 жыл бұрын
I'm giving up on Rhode Island Reds. Mine lay well at first, then seem to peter out almost completely after just 2 years. I have gotten just as many eggs from my Barred Rocks, and for a longer period of time. My RIR's are not as friendly, and some are just down right hostile, the rest were somewhat flighty. (At least in my experience.)
@victoryfarm7 жыл бұрын
In these years since we made this video it seems to me that the hatchery makes as much or a bigger difference than the breed. I've only tried 4 different hatcheries and out of those the best results for us were with McMurray. What you mention is common and is why most commercial layers are culled after 18 months or so.
@angryagain687 жыл бұрын
Guess I just need to get with that same program of rotating them out more frequently too. I am searching for the best small flock mix combination now. I would prefer if the egg production didn't spike so much at one time of the year, and fall off to almost nothing at all the rest of the year. A mix that has a couple of birds that produce well in the fall/winter, (even if they don't do quite as well as others in the summer.) And a couple of others that are just egg laying machines the rest of the year. (But then, aren't we all looking for that?) Might be a topic for another video.........?

Can I put little chicks in a unheated barn?I will have two heat lamps?Or should I have them in the house for a few weeks?We live in upstate NY and it's cold right now.
@victoryfarm9 жыл бұрын
Really depends on the temp. We've done chicks in the barn with two heat lamps in December a bunch of times, but at that point it didn't really go below 30f. If you're expecting single digits like we are here in NJ my gut says they are too young right now. They need to be kept around 90f in the beginning. I think you should probably play it safe and go for the house.

Very good info and tips. I am going to be brooding chicks and adding them to my adult flock in the Spring. I know you said 8 weeks. In the past I have kept the chickens in separate coops outside for a few weeks before integrating. I thought this was to prevent sickness and disease as they can be vulnerable in a new environment. Also I heard it is best to add them at night when the adults are less active. You think I will be ok adding my 8 week olds straight in the coop in the evening? I worry about sickness.
@victoryfarm9 жыл бұрын
I have another video on moving a brood into an adult flock. It's not about avoiding sickness and disease as much as carnage through suffocation and attack. Although nearly all of our moves went off without a problem a few went spectacularly wrong. In the worst we lost 17 birds out of 44 overnight. It was a hard lesson.
