It was a pleasure watching how you overcame your obsticales in persuing your intrest in your art and studio. Great ideas! I am interested in sewing but have been procastinating. I love making rag dolls because i find them very cute. I'm also planning to make a love quilt using my late mum's scarfs, shawls and garments too as a remembarance of her. It's been less than 3 months since she passed. I guess i'll givee myself some more time? However, Watching you has given me more inspiration to move forward. ❤

I follow a number of artists on KZfaq - discovered you a week or so ago. What tickled me was that you turned 40! Oh, my dear Jess, I'm turning 80 next week! Thank all the gods I'm in good health and intend staying that way... I've used art materials since aged 7-ish and have always had a bit of a struggle with "style"... yeah, that. I've done The Artist's Way twice before and have just started for the third time as I felt totally blocked - many reasons. BUT... the good news is that things started happening on Day 4! So, I've let my inner artistic child loose in the field of all possibilities. And she's playing like she's 7 again! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Hi Jess. I watched this as I sit on the floor(!) surrounded by teaching binders as I sort and recycle and get ready to get rid of loads of stuff. I, too, want to start working on new art projects but my small space is so cluttered with things I “might need someday”(ahem) but that I never end up using. Part of my issue is that when my space is perfectly tidy, I can’t find anything. I need to see my art supplies and then my creativity jumps up and down clapping when it finds that perfect quin violet and I put it next to, oh, I don’t know, a manganese blue that glows in the dark. You know the one by DS. Alas, dear soul, I swear we think so often in similar patterns. I’d love to share my art with you but don’t want to here as it’s not about me. I love how you delicately replaced Pierre’s paw. So cute. Be well. And may you wear your day with ease. Dana

Hello Dana, Thank you so much for your lovely note! Ah, life on the floor. I find myself here often. :) There certainly is something about a space that's too tidy that doesn't want to allow you to get it dirty... I've been coming up against that one lately. And I would love to see your art, are you on Instagram? If you are do say hello or pop a link in the message. xj

I will be moving into a new apartment - one that we will own not rent - here in Portugal this fall. I will install so many of your ideas in my tiny studio space! Thanks so much for sharing. May I ask - how long does it take your small oils on raw canvas to dry?
@studioxjess
@studioxjess 2 күн бұрын
Wonderful! So excited for you to move into your new space, and in Portugal no less... In terms of the oils, it depends on how thick the paint is. The flowers take maybe a week to dry? I'd estimate. They are actually on clear primed linen called "Senso" (I have heard that oil paint eats the fibers of raw overtime). <3

never worked with oilpaints, but your newly built tube Station seems to be very handy when working with these kind of paints. I also love your botanical art that resembles the japanese ink art. It is also very nice to see you pulling tarot cards. Love love love your videos ❤❤ i really like how you permit yourself to experience other mediums and styles! I feel like flowers are your current muse! Sooo beautiful! Very of often as artists we tend to stay in the same style over and over, afraid to try something new that would remove us from the consistency of our “known to all” art style. What freedom stepping outside our comfort zone brings 😊 namaste 🙏

Hello lovely! Oh yes flowers are certainly a muse right now, maybe always! I definitely grapple a lot with the whole "consistency" versus "freedom" thing... and I think it's a balance of both. Lovely, you always inspire me to tidy my studio up 😂. We had a fabulous time in Arizona, saw so much changing landscape it was a real treat and I’ve taken so many photographs I don’t know where to start! I was given loads of old slate roof tiles last year, so I’m going to be recreating some of those landscapes onto the slate. Unfortunately I only have one week left before it’s back to school, 😢 but I know I’ll be in the studio in the evenings so that’s ok. The allotment is going well, getting back on top of the weeds after being away 😂 but we are there tomorrow morning to continue, got rained off the last few days, and my mum was looking after the greenhouse veggies for us, so they are happy. One thing I did do, was paint two Koi and have printed them off as small prints, and into frames, to take to the next farmers market and craft fair in the next village next month, will see how they go…looking forward to the next video! ❤

Welcome back from the desert! Gosh, time flies by so fast. That is a fabulous idea about painting landscapes on slate tiles, I've been painting on some wood and liking the change of surface a lot. Am about to clean up my dead summer beds and think about Fall... greens, at least I'll do some greens. And do you live in a village? (The one next to the craft fair village.) That is another escapist dream of mine, village life. Good luck with back to school madness! xj

I enjoyed seeing your fine abstract work. We have had a similar path in art. I was a commercial artist, illustrator/ designer for a major corporation for many years that had hundreds of clients, and I freelanced as well. I wrote and illustrated some children's books too. I saw that you did that type of thing as well. I always try to defy labels and even the word artist throughs me off because I just seem like a builder or something. I simply make things that are artful. The background of forty plus years in design helps me as a painter of modernist abstract work which is relatively new for me and I'm loving it. Do you feel that your background is the foundation of your modernist work? There's a lot of design to it. I was primarily in my fine art work a contemporary realist painter that switched over to abstract and still trying to figure out if it's a season that will change. Abstract work fascinates me in decision making of when to stop and not overwork things. In realist work everything is planned out and generally I know pretty much what the finish will look like, and abstract is the opposite of that which I find joy in.
@studioxjess
@studioxjess 10 күн бұрын
Yes! I can relate to all of that, I have done so many different things and my path is constantly evolving, so the labeling thing has always been a challenge. They all just seem a bit too tight. I do think my background feeds into my design-esque abstracts... I am actually craving a bit of a break from the more modernist stuff at the moment and moving into a more painterly way... we shall see what happens :D Thanks for saying hello!
