The Sainsbury's supermarket on the left at 7.00 is on the site of what was, between 1960 and 1973, the Museum of British Transport. It was notable for being fronted by a 30-foot high elevated statue of Stephenson's Rocket. When Sainsbury's acquired the site, the whole frontage of the store they built, instead of being a window or wall was a massive TV screen (actually several linked screens forming one image) running advertisements for their products on a loop. I daresay it seemed a genius idea at the time but it proved a serious distraction for passing motorists and malfunctioned so frequently that Sainsbury's eventually gave in and installed a conventional albeit sloping glass front.

That's amazing! It seems that Sainsbury's have a really good archive department so I've found a load of photos here: www.sainsburyarchive.org.uk/catalogue/search/search/ewao-everywhere:video-wall?date_from=1974&date_to=2013 I wonder if they'll let me use them in a video? Thanks for the info 👍

When I went last time through the Tooting markets (1962) there were good spaces or walkways! Now it seems like all the stall owners want to 'push out' and make restricted walkways? I hope they don't have any fires in that market! Very bad now!

Where the green grass on the right hand side is, used to be very old shops! there was a place called South Wimbledon Motors. An old guy had it and I used to take apart old motorcycle engines for him in exchange for free parts for my old Lambretta! Thinking back a lot of what was being scrapped is nowadays deemed 'priceless'

I lived in Cheam, and my mothers' family all came from Sutton, so as a kid and adult I was always in Sutton. Took my driving test there as well. Left the area for the south-west of England some 31 years ago, so to see how much has changed, and for me not for the good.

@@SimonPain Fresh air, 50% less noise, mostly road noise and the wining of electric motors, fewer cars due to CyberTaxis/car pooling, more efficient “professional” driving, almost impossible to collide with anything. Instead of parking at work, it would drive family members to school, shopping (delivered), earn money as a Cab in between, many people wouldn’t bother owning a car, let alone two car families, AI will make better decisions for ride hailing vs destination and ride share (routing). Wheels and under carriage will be enclosed to absorb road noise. Ergonomics will trump styling (sadly) to reduce wind noise and aid efficiency. Electric “cattle” fences to keep animals from causing chaos. A personal car (single passenger) would be taxed heavily and be considered elitist. No steering wheel or pedals, instead, infotainment so we don’t need to acknowledge our fellow passengers. All in my lifetime (I’m 75). Jetsons? Enjoy your walks because our arms and legs will have little else to do. I could be wrong though. Cheers from San Diego

Yay! WIMPYS, and it’s for sale, ❤, thanks, that made my day, memories of the one on Sutton high street where I had my first Hamburger Ever, circa 1955, I was 6 and my sister was barely 5, my aunt visited from London and took us out to eat for the first time ever, my sister passed away 6 months ago, I’m the last of our family now, no kids. I miss her, sweet memories though. Thanks for that mate, I know you remembered my WIMPYS story from a couple of weeks ago. We had just moved into 13 Bidhams Crescent and my Mum had just given birth to my younger brother. Glad I have a vivid memory of my childhood, tears of joy and sadness as I’m typing, it’s all good. I just discovered this video of Walton Hill, it must have been prior to subscribing, fantastic. I had never been through Mogador, it’s gorgeous. As a kid I caddied at the course one time, taking a break from caddying at Kingswood, I was early teens. I joined the Boys Brigade in Walton on the Hill for about a year, fished at Mere Pond a couple of times, never caught anything. I’ll be looking for other videos now. Cheers from San Diego

@@SimonPain About where the Lobster & Grill is now. About 100 meters from the train station on the right, heading north. I remember it tasted fried oniony but very tasty. I think they still have a couple of stores left in the UK. The name came from the character Wimpy of Popeye fame. He would “pay you back Tuesday” for a hamburger, hehe, my dad bought me a bus conductor outfit for Christmas, I wore the hat and a pipe, when Popeye was on, 1955 ish, I was six. Cheers

I’m speechless - I was sad about the demise of the chip bag, it was the star of the show a stroke of artistic genius and the only item I could identify. Since the descriptions didn’t seem to be descriptive of the product, I wonder what AI would describe when shown these images? Is abstract art a sign of insanity? I’ve often wondered. Thanks guys, very interesting. Cheers from San Diego

Enjoying this. The Upper High Street hasn't changed that much with the exception of businesses and some new buildings. At the top before you head off to Drift Bridge there used to be on your right a frozen food store (fish, meat, veggies, fruit & deserts). Used to get this amazing black current cheesecake. Loved eating it frozen!!!! Oh, and choc ices! Also, if you cut through on the right was a tack shop and a few small businesses. I remember the newspaper shop and getting tonic water from them on a Sunday. A bit further up and off to the right is Epsom College. I wonder what school uniforms Lester Bowdens still sells? Not mine.
