Incredible David I am reasonably sure my grandmother had the same radio in her bedroom. Think it was called a Micky Mouse radio. The story was my father was a pilot in WW2 his brother was Robert Hutton he was lost on the HMAS Yarra in 1941 a very interesting story in its own right. My grandmother was devastated after loosing her youngest son Robert only 20 years old she really never got over the lose. Fortunately my father survived the war which is a amazing story. He was stationed in Singapore when the Japanese over ran the British defences. Very few Australian personnel escaped before the Japanese imprisoned most personnel who became POW's. Back to the radio my grandfather bought this radio for my grandmother to try to console her lose. I don't know what happened to the radio but I remember this beuatiful little white radio in her bedroom. Sorry to reminisce but the radio was part of a very interesting but very sad part of my childhood. I really enjoy watching your older videos oh and the ones too.🤗

Feel free to reminisce Bruce, stories from this difficult time are always interesting and recreating the past is what my channel is about. Yes, these were called Mickey Mouse radios, this one has Astor Mickey stamped onto the front between the knobs. When Astor sold the original model radio it very slightly resembled the head of Mickey Mouse and they even added a drawing of Mickey Mouse on the back and on some models he was on the dial. Disney took them to court so later models were changed to Astor Mickey. As a side note, Astor could have bought the rights to the Mickey Mouse name and image for what they spent challenging Disney in court. I can only imagine Astor thought the copyright laws didn't reach so far from America to be applicable in Australia🙂

@DavidTipton101 Thankyou David very interesting that a Australian company like Astor would try to take on Disney incredible pieceof history. They must have had someone with very deep pockets. Last night I just finished watching your 5 part video on the battery powered Bush radio a massive amount of work well done. Take care Bruce🤗😃

I've just managed to get hold of one of these. Probably a dumb question but does it matter which way round the brown ac 2 pin mains connector goes for the live and neutral pins? Also, does it need an earth?
@DavidTipton101Күн бұрын
Hello David, nice find, these are a cute little set. As far as the radio operation is concerned it doesn't matter which way the wires go, but I always put the active side to the switch so power is cut when the switch is open. From memory, you could earth this set if you want to, It's not a hot chassis set. I didn't bother, I kept it original 🙂

Yes, those dial cords are a trip. The dial cord restringing diagram looks a bit too primitive. Always remember, upon restringing the dial cord to any radio, the dial pointer has to be aligned with the numbers 😀 on the radio 📻 dial. This is so ya get full range across the radio dial, and so the dial pointer reads 📚 accurately, corresponding with the numbers on the radio dial. Also, the dial pointer may need to be repositioned on the dial cord. From this point 👉, make sure that the dial pointer has been securely crimped onto the dial cord. This will avoid the dial pointer hanging up, or shifting about on the dial cord, or even the dial pointer coming 🤔 off, and even falling 😳 down in the bottom of the radio. Your friend, Jeff.
@DavidTipton1012 күн бұрын
Hi Jeff, I agree, dial strings can bring the best undone. This one was tricky getting the cord to stay in place. I aligned it pretty well so the numbers line up 🙂

This is another radio 📻 I haven't commented on. I might have on Part 1. It appears 😳 be Bakelite. Ya haven't put a year on this one. I'm going to guess that it's circa 1956. That could mean that the speaker 🔊 may have been field coil at the time. Beautiful 😍 Job Mr. Tipton!! Your friend, Jeff!!

Hi David I remember my aunty having one of these radios. This was in the fifties when I was a kid I remember how she looked after that radio she would put a soft cloth over it when not used she didnt have a TV and it was her pride and joy. I remeber how she would say it was time for the news just how much value she would put into it. Just turning it on was respectful process. Compared to today my kids and grand kids don't have value she showed. To her it was an incredible amazing piece of wonderful equipment. How things have changed. 😊
@DavidTipton1013 күн бұрын
We worked hard to afford expensive equipment like these radios Bruce. Not like now when you pop down to the shop and buy something that gets sent to landfill in a year or two. We didn't have a lot of money growing up so I can just see Aunty carefully placing a cloth on it to protect it. Thanks Bruce 🙂

A great video David. I’m making this comment 4 years late but I think it’s worthy. The el33 and 6v6 are not really equivalent. The el33 needs about 3 volts bias and has twice the gain of the 6v6 which as you pointed out needs much higher bias. Who knows whether in the day they changed the bias resistors for the different valve's. ,!! According to radiomuseum Philips made el33 valves in Sydney up to 1944. I have an air zone 414 which is of the same vintage as this plum pudding and similar circuit. It arrived with a 6v6 output valve but luckily in my junk box I found a good el33. I was watching exeters lab where he was restoring an air zone like mine and found that the 6v6 can damage the radio. So that may be the cause of the oc output transformer in the plum pudding. And the 6v6 could be weak giving confusing results. Anyway I enjoyed this video, thank you David.
@DavidTipton1013 күн бұрын
I don't recall the details of this one Robert. It was early on and I had even less clue as to how these radios work than I do now. You would think the bias resistor would need adjusting to suit either valve. I would also wonder it the OPT specs would need to be different and the power transformer upgraded to handle the extra filament current draw of the EL33.

Hi David listening to an almost 100 year old radio every day is a special treat. Apparently they used to hum a lot. An old chap told me many years ago that sets hummed a lot. You would walk into the room a the hum was pervasive. Apparently electrolytics weren’t available in 1931. And I have also has directly heated valves develop shorts between the filament and other electrodes. They stretch with age and can short. 5y3 especially
@DavidTipton1013 күн бұрын
Hi Robert, thanks. The hum isn't that noticeable when the set is running. The speaker doesn't have a humbucker as far as I can tell but I think I subbed in a PM speaker and the hum was still there. It starts as soon as power is applied, so it's coming from the directly heated 80 valve. I don't recall if I tried a different 80 in there, worth a try. I know others working on this chassis have struggled with hum too 🙂

Dave, great job! I have a radio that I need to rewrap for the first time. I was just wondering where you purchased your vinyl. It seems like good stuff. I see a lot on amazon.
@DavidTipton1016 күн бұрын
I got mine from AliExpress. Google "PU sofa patch" and you should get some leads. Blitz in Germany suggested leather look car wrap, they use it to cover car interior trims. It can be heated and will cover round corners without leaving stretch marks. I will buy some to try out. It's pretty thin though and may show irregularities in the substrate. He redid his Jaguar roof with it. Good luck 👍🙂

You are one lucky rascal! What are the chances you would find the exact same volume/on-off switch for a radio manufactured a lifetime ago in a country so far away that it is closer measured through the center of a globe than if measured along the sea lanes; yet you had that odd switch assembly in your used parts bin of antique radio parts? Amazing!

I missed commenting on this one. This looks kind of like 👍 one of Shango066's radios (by style). Be wary 😟, in case this radio 📻 has dual dial cords. I hope 🙏 it has a dial cord restringing diagram inside the cabinet. I even see that you're using your wire winder here. Hopefully your speaker 🔊 cone is okay. By the video 📹, I think the speaker is field coil. Your friend, Jeff.

Hi Bruce, thank you. As I have come to understand, there is no standard lettering for pots and I suspect it is different in different countries, GB and US for instance. Modern pots we get here are mainly from China and are numbered A as log and B as linear. All very confusing 🤔

Another great rebuild. I like your re-wraping the vinyl & gold lettering. There is something satisfying about setting a copper rivet with a ball peen hammer, but I always use the ball end first, then the flat, but just my silly method. And love those self setting rivets. Can you contact me about restoring a Breville 621 valve radio for me.

My weeding tool of choice is a little dental pick, it's great for holding small parts down. My worst weeding job so far was heat-transfer vinyl, two lines of music with lots and lots of tiny bits, cut on a faulty plotter that didn't quite cut all the way. The resulting T-shirt did end up alright though.
