If the blacksmith is using modern processes, then the boat builders should stop messing about with side axes. Get your power planes out and make the project viable. As long as you know how it was done then just crack on.

My late husband, Barry, was a keen woodworker and would have been fascinated by this remarkable reconstruction of the Sutton Hoo ship. Unfortunately I only came to view Time Team after his death in 2021, taking Patreon membership in his memory. As an aside his late brother in law had a property in Gloucestershire with adjoining plantation of sessile oaktrees, which he managed. They had been planted, I gather, to furnish masts for the Royal Navy ships in the days of sail.

1:14:10 Archimedes has taught us his law of buoyancy: A body submerged (whole or partially) in a liquid is subject to an upward force equal to the weight of the displaced amount of liquid... 7 tons (as the the carpenter boss said) equals roughly 7.1 m3...Surely a 88 foot boat is able to displace a mere 7.1 m3 of water without going under...

I know it is maybe not fair to the other presenters and new team members. because they all are good. But there is only ONE Sir Tony Robinson. And one Professor Aston,God bless his soul. Phil Harding? What a guy. But times goes on, and so does life. Therefore, good luck to all and everybody!!!!!! Even if this is no - dig - by TT as such. And no the usual 3 days only...

The fact that so many pieces of history have been lost to reckless ignorance and indifference is what gives greater value to everything that has survived. Without guys like farmer John, we'd be tripping over every mundane remnant of the past like prisoners in a museum.

Is it me, or does Dr. Martin Carver (6:15) sound a bit like Mick Aston? It made me tear up a bit hearing talking to "him" again. ❤

My ancestors came from Soterle which is not far from Sutton Hoo. Soterlega was mentioned in William's first "census," also know as the Domesday Book. This is south of Norwich and quite close to Beccles in East Anglia. It appears that Normans, who came w William in 1066, occupied the Anglo Saxon estate, taking it's name as a surname about 1100 AD.I suspect that the original occupants of the estate might have been knowledgeable of the original "mounds." I look forward to following this series and learning more about Sutton Hoo!!

I wonder if they talked to the guys in Norway who did the Mykelbust ship that's 100' and is seaworthy. Also found in a burial mound. Super cool, Sutton Hoo is one of the things that got me into history.

A superb documentary Tony Robinson, I've been involved with Danish and Norwegian projects as a crew member on the Havhingsten fra Glendalough, and a volunteer building the Saga Oseberg, but I've always dreamed of seeing a full-scale replica of the Sutton Hoo Ship, and thankfully this is now a reality. A few years ago FTDNA informed me of a close genetic match with a Swedish warrior (VK555) found in the Salme Boat burials in Estonia back in 2008 & 2010, quite incredible to think about regarding my life-long interest in Viking Ships!

Nice there making these new episodes. but they feel a bit dragged out. Part of the charm of the old time team is that the episodes are always under an hour this takes like 3 times a normal episode
