Callas could do anything. The size of the voice ,the versatility and expression made her great. I'll always believe she satisfied her needs from the press and public as well as music.

Seeing her in person as Alceste at the Rome Opera House in 1966 is one of my fondest operatic memories. Her complete command of the Classical style required for Gluck surpasses any other soprano I have ever heard. It is unfortunate that she was overshadowed by Callas early on and basically remained less well known due to that.

Gender didn't insinuate herself into jet set society , date shipping tycoons or insult the crowned heads of Europe. Nor did she seek high profile record deals or huge recital tours. She was content to be the "pirate queen " with a legion of opera Queens worshipping her every note. She was the greatest soprano we never heard. Heard ABOUT her, but....if she had had the kind of late career debut as Olivero, ir would have been a sold out sensation.

I have only just come across this singer on a recording I purchased of Donizetti's Belisario. I was bowled over by the purity of her voice. It is unfortunate that there are so few recordings of her. Her voice is thrilling and immediately commanded my attention.

Here she has the failure of the orchestra/conductor to keep proper tempo in the middle of the cavatina. Her mastery is shown in how she assumes the leadership of the orchestra by maintaining the tempo in the score forcing them to play the right tempo until the conductor wakes up again.

Giovanni Battista Meneghini was a user and a blood sucker. He did nothing to better Callas, except for the money he put in his pockets. He made her early recordings of the worst Quality. Basta.

When I think of Callas I think of Armida, Vespri Siciliani, Ratto dal Seraglio. Which we never got carefully done in a studio, but we have a Butterly and two Toscas. There were a few decent decisions, but too few realized what they had when they had her.
