This is awesome. How can I put this on my sherline cnc mill with lenux
@SherlineProducts14 күн бұрын
We are investigating if this can be done using Linux. We should have an answer for you on Monday.
@SherlineProducts11 күн бұрын
The short answer is that this can be done. We are confirming which additional information and wiring components are needed to make this happen. We should have a complete answer later this week.

Congrats on a great accomplishment! I’ve just recently purchased a Sherline lathe and mill, and am frankly blown away by the quality and precision that these machines and the tooling produced for them exhibit! Thanks for staying American made, and continuing the traditional attention to detail!

May I be the first to congratulate you on your very well earned anniversary. I have 3 lathes of varying sizes. I looked and looked and decided my first would be a Sherline. She has had lots of use over 30 plus years or so but is the very best small lathe you can buy. Dead accurate, long lived and still looks like new. Very good value, very capable little girl still on her original drive belt, she will out live me I suspect. Very well done and keep it up. Best small lathe you can buy. Greetings from the UK and thanks USA.

I just got the 4400 CNC lathe with the old bed. I am thinking to bolting it to a 10mm thick aluminum plate to increase rigidity. What would you recommend @SherlineProducts?
@SherlineProductsАй бұрын
Below is the recommendation from our shop foreman. "If he has the original lathe base, it is structurally sound as it is (with the exception of tipping from side to side). This is why we recommend mounting it to a “shelf board” or wooden workbench. If he wants to use aluminum instead, that’s fine. However, we have found that the wood absorbs and dampens any cutter vibration noise. A perfect example of this type of noise is when you are turning down hex or square stock. The first few turning passes are “interrupted cuts” because you are only cutting the higher corners off of the stock. The sound that it makes is similar to that of a machine gun (Tat, Tat, Tat, Tat, Tat). If you mount the base to a sheet metal work table, the sheet metal amplifies the vibration noise (just like a drum). If he mounts it to a thick aluminum plate, it will not amplify the noise as much as the sheet metal does, but it will be louder than it would be when the base is mounted on wood. In short, we recommend wood."

Can't help feeling like the replacement of an I-beam with a span that is only supported at each end is a step backwards.
@SherlineProductsАй бұрын
1. The original base was a casting that needed to be straightened before it was machined. 2. The bed's mounting area on the headstock end was machined. However, there was always some height variation between the headstock end mounting area and the tailstock end, which led to a less-than-perfect bed mount. 3. The area and distance between the headstock and tailstock mounting areas are the same on the new base as it was on the old base. 4. The aluminum billet base is much truer and flatter. 5. The actual “I beam” of our lathe is the steel bed, which will not bend under any force that is exerted during a machining operation. 6. With the additional width of the new base, the machine is much more stable. The lathe can actually be used without mounting it to a work surface, and it will not tip over. 7. The new base is the same design as our ball screw lathe base, which has now been field tested for three years without any negative feedback.

I am slow....why are changing gears here? can't they just slide to accommodate the height difference? If we are cutting the same thread, the ratio should be the same, no?
@SherlineProducts2 ай бұрын
When using the risers, an extra gear is added to account for the height difference. You cannot “just slide gears to account for the difference.”

I won't say that I abuse it, but I do regularly use it and I look after it? I have a big 11 inch lathe so I can make stock smaller, but for small parts, small holes and tapping (12ba) Sherline is the tool of choice. It's still bang on accurate and still on it's original drive belt? All original. I have a great big mill, a great big pillar drill and a small cnc mill. But there are jobs only this little baby can do. The chucks are beautiful. If you want a small capacity lathe (actually I have turned 45mm dia cast iron on it with no issue at all). Get one.

It would be nice to see them on a sturdier/more rigid cast iron base. It would be even nice to see these like a mini hardinge lathe. And it's not like it is impossible to do nor would it increase costs.
@SherlineProducts4 ай бұрын
The cost of cast bases has skyrocketed. That is why we are transitioning to the machined bases, so we can keep prices down for our customers.

Depth of cut should read 0.025" instead of .25". Otherwise reduction of diameter would be .50" instead of .050" and feed rate would be more in the .1"/minute range if even feasible.

You are correct. Thank you for pointing this out.

Whats the reason for so much chatter on the finish. Typical American ingenuity at play here. The old sherline was very rigid and accurate, the new one is pretty fancy watered down version
@SherlineProducts5 ай бұрын
Thank you for your feedback. However, there is no chatter on the finish of this part. Our new machines also have ball screws that hold tighter tolerance, achieve better finishes, and have faster feed rates than our older lead screw machines.

I cut a dovetail on the back side of my z-axis handwheel (opposite of the handle) so I can easily slide my tailstock on and off. Just turn the handwheel to line the dovetail up with the bed and the tailstock can slide right on or off without any kind of process or time spent.
