Hi, I'm planning on getting a pigeon in the near future. You had mentioned it's important to let them out for exercise time. How do you get them back in the cage?
@BubblyPetz19 күн бұрын
If they have a favorite nest spot outside the cage and become aggressive if you are reaching your hands around there, then you can grab them pretty easily. Otherwise, you can totally black out the room and make it dark and quickly grab them since they can’t see very well in the dark, and their eyes take longer than ours to adjust to the dark. If you are able to train your pigeon to step up or a command to go back to their cage, then that is even better because they won’t be stressed out when it’s time to go back, but mine was well trained, and even he could not willingly be placed inside the the cage, so I had to resort to the first two methods.

birds don't belong in cages if you can't give them a home without a cage then you shouldn't have a bird
@BubblyPetz19 күн бұрын
Yeah, that is the ideal. My pigeon no longer has a cage and is free roam just because of how large he is. My smaller birds do have a cage since it’s easier to provide one large enough for them to fly around in, and since I have so many, it would be difficult to keep up with the cleaning if they were free roam like my pigeon. I have cats too, and the smaller birds would be more likely to escape the room and get hurt if they were out 24/7. I know a lot of parrots benefit from having a cage to be used as like their own little space too, but as long as their owner let’s them free roam most of the day, then I think it’s fine for them to have a cage.

@BubblyPetz1 I have a question not to relevant to the video but I need to get some help with some bird stuff so I can maybe get things set up for canaries later but have to situate the chickens 1st. Do you know of a substrate compost that will help with the odor of the chickens waste on the ground? Its a fairly large yard with some slate and brick planters I need a substrate that will go in the big sectioned off planter areas. And then I want to grow patches of wildflowers. I want to put the canaries in the bird shed next to the chickens coup.
@kovenant72 ай бұрын
@BubblyPetz1 Or if you know of a good source for info that would help tremendously thanks!
@BubblyPetz12 ай бұрын
@@kovenant7 I’m not too sure since I haven’t had chickens before. I’d think soil that’s not too damp and has plenty of worms, springtails, pill bugs, and other decomposers would help to break down the waste and keep the odor to a minimum, but I know chickens produce a lot of waste and like to eat bugs so I’m not sure how successful it’d be longterm. I’d look into poultry forums like “BackYard Chickens” to see what other people use in their setups, and you could probably get an answer from someone there with more knowledge.

Thanks for the tips. I have a large, really high extented storage room connected to where the chickens are. I want to put a large cage with a rain barrel outside the wall so that fresh rain water will flow through a container in the cage. At times I might travel for a week, for work. The belgian canary will have the chickens next door for company. Does this seem like a good option? Thanks!
@BubblyPetz12 ай бұрын
It sounds interesting. If you are able to make the rainwater barrel idea work, then I see no problem. I’d just make sure that wherever the canary can come into contact with the water is not too deep to prevent any possibility of drowning.

@BubblyPetz13 ай бұрын
I would recommend that you get a good quality air purifier and make sure that you are providing bathing water often for the bird. Opening your windows frequently to let in the fresh air may also help, but I’m not too sure if any allergens that may blow in would trigger your asthma. Other than that, I would make sure to regularly clean the area that you keep the cage and wherever the bird likes to hangout at to keep the dust to a minimum.

Petting, not easy, bathing, when they want to. Yes they Mult alot, sometimes appear to explode. Which was funny as a guest mentioned that "I think your bird just exploded" He didn't. but it was funny. Very good video, and a great bird to own. Talking, not so much, they will sing. What I learned, they decide what song they like. Messy, destructive yes, very true. But I'll take the bird over the dog +

hey, is this okay for a canary and how often would i feed this to them ?? would i also feed them a canary seed mix alongside this or is the chop on its own enough ??
@BubblyPetz14 ай бұрын
Hi, anytime I make chop for my birds, I use it to feed all of them which includes my canary, finches, and parrots. This is why I make sure to finely blend the pieces so that my little birds can still eat it. You can feed this mix as their main food everyday, and I would just add a bit of the canary seed mix into the bowl where you put the chop and mix it up before feeding.

Round cages are inappropriate for birds, they do not give them security, they must have corners. Furthermore, the ones seen in the video are very small. The fact that they are hanging does not give them the security they need either. I feel sad for them u.u
@BubblyPetz14 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I ended up moving the budgie to a larger cage with my other budgie and putting the canary in his own round cage and the three finches in another one. They are only in the cage to sleep at night, and I haven’t noticed any issues with the hanging nature or roundness giving them frights. I let them out to free roam during the day, and when it starts getting dark outside they go back into their cages themselves to sleep.

I got a pigeon four days ago! I got really lucky with him since he already enjoys being outside with me. He willingly flew to my head in day two and three lmao. He is also comfortable with my hand and fingers! Not 100% sure if he was hand raised ( I think it’s illegal where I live to hand raise a bird if not really needed ). He isn’t a racer pigeon though, I think the previous owner kept pigeons as hobbies and maybe fed them by hand time to time! Always do background and history checks on the pigeon you’re getting. ( rescues and racing pigeon adopting is best if you wanna help pigeons! But it might take more time to bond with them imo ).
@BubblyPetz14 ай бұрын
Wow, you are lucky with that! I agree with investigating the backgrounds of your birds since it can help to pick out one without any health issues, a good temperament, if they were hand raised, etc. It can be helpful to know how they were raised so that you can be more accommodating when taking care of and working with them. Unfortunately, it might not always be possible to find out this information like with my birds that I got from Stromberg’s Chickens. I can only suspect that they were raised in an aviary/coop and didn’t have much human interaction from their behavior around me.
@hnnamb4 ай бұрын
@@BubblyPetz1 I really did :) I didn’t get much information either 😭 he did give out hints that he sometimes hand fed them and they would hang out on him. But I don’t think they were 100% hand raised 🤷♀️. Who knows I didn’t ask because I didn’t want to seem weird but maybe I should’ve.. after all, being safe it’s better than being sorry lol. I just know that my pigeon, Solivan wasn’t for racing and that I assume the breeder only keeps pigeons as a hobby somewhere inside a coop! But I do hope there will be a chance I can adopt a rescue ☹️. There’s so many pigeons who need help.. though sadly it’s hard in my counties to actually find any rescues since we really can’t just take an animal, like a healthy stray dog or cat off the street unless they’re injured or heavily disabled to the point they cannot survive in the wild. Even if it’s a baby bird that was not wanted by their bird parents and it was being left on the ground to die. We sometimes get the chance to raise them ourselves. But I think you need to have a decent experience, since it will most likely be let out into the wild soon once they’re capable of doing so. Which is understandable for wild animals honestly. But most people here won’t get out of their way to help a wild animal here. And rescues are not anywhere near where I live ☹️.
@BubblyPetz14 ай бұрын
@@hnnamb Aw, that sucks that people aren’t so kind towards animals where you live. It’s great that you want to take in a rescue though. Maybe you can look online to see if there are any pigeon rescues that would be willing to ship within your country.
