I have a ton of fall leaves saved up so I’m gonna put down leaves and then cardboard and then manure and top with woodchips. I hope to top it all with compost in spring and edge the area in spring too. It’s too cold outside right now.

The comment on worm tea is not accurate. If the worm bin drips, what comes out is leachate, which contains bad anaerobic microbes. (see also Dr Elaine Ingham's work). The worm bin should be damp, but dry enough to not leak any moisture out. If the bedding gets too wet, just add a few handfuls of bedding to soak up the excess moisture. REAL worm tea is water that is run through finished worm compost.

Hi Billie, You’re right about the terminology mix up, nice catch! While these terms are often used interchangeably, “leachate” is the more accurate term for the liquid that forms in the bottom of the worm bin whereas “worm tea” is a liquid created by steeping vermiculture compost in water. Regarding anaerobic properties, studies we reviewed did not analyze oxygen content of leachate directly, but generally found the presence of nitrate - a compound that indicates the leachate is not anaerobic. Most studies also found little or no toxicity, especially if the leachate is diluted to 50% with water. We saw no mention that the presence of leachate indicates poor management. I did this last year but had a big infestation of fungus gnats. It got worse as I planted. Is it just part of it since all the material is breaking down?
