@@Resonanttheme That's a nice thermoacoustic experiment! Looks like it performs a bit better than a simple coil type pop-pop engine.
@Resonanttheme Жыл бұрын
i wonder if the heat is too high and all the coil is so hot that essentially it's just two straight tubes that can't support feedback? I know with my quartz tubes a single straight tube with no boiler just forces the water down the tube and it doesn't come back up, without a lot of surface area from a boiler to re-condense the steam. Maybe try a single fine point flame heat source to see if that helps and allow the coiled part closest to the straight exhaust tubes to be a little cooler if possible.
@TheDenyingDutchman Жыл бұрын
Insulating the coil from the tubes is probably the easiest solution for copper coils, but I gave up on this boat. It's a nice shelf queen.
@Resonanttheme Жыл бұрын
@@TheDenyingDutchman It may be that the copper exhaust tubes would benefit from being more partially submerged in water. Often it makes a difference on some of my tests where dipping more of the exhaust end in water provides a better hot/cold gradient for heat transfer.

I've purchased 1" thick tiles which cost me a fortune for my 15x15 round pool. I have two questions: 1. Did you notice that the legs are collapsing the foam from the weight? 2. Does the bottom feel nice in your pool now?
@TheDenyingDutchman2 жыл бұрын
Bottom of the pool feels soft, but not too soft. The weight of the legs do leave a permanent imprint on the foam, but does not destroy it. Since this video I only have tiles under the liner of the pool.
@emeresbestres12 жыл бұрын
@@TheDenyingDutchman Wouldn't that keep the legs lower than the rest of the pool. The weight of the water might stretch the liner down from the top. I'm afraid it would rip. That's why everything should be on the same level. But in your case it shouldn't be a problem. Your tiles are not 1" thick.

Hello The Denying Dutchman love your pop pop engine. Question how difficult is it to solder with silver when working with thin metal for pop pop engine diaphragm with out having it burn up or get distorted from the heat required for silver soldering . What gauge thickness did you use for the diaphragm and was it made of sheet brass or copper . I am currently trying to build a small diaphragm type pop pop engine, trying to decide on solder to use seeing silver seems to give a good strong joint to the metal and most likely good longevity to the engine . I thought I would ask you . Any help would be greatly appreciated David
@TheDenyingDutchman2 жыл бұрын
Not sure what gauge the diaphragm is, the brass sheet was about as thin as paper. I soldered the engine upside down on a firebrick so that the diaphragm only received radiant heat. Because the boiler is shaped like a square Brodie helmet only the edges of the brass sheet burn up. (It becomes as brittle as burned paper) But that is no problem, since the capillary action of melting solder ensures the entire brim is covered in solder. Besides the inevitable metal fatigue, the engine is indestructible. (I have no clue how many hours (or days?) it takes for the engine to fail because of metal fatigue.) I hope that answers your questions.
@gofast13942 жыл бұрын
@@TheDenyingDutchman Hello Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions I really appreciate it . Has your design diaphragm type engine held up well is it still running nicely . Am I correct in saying the key to all of this when using hight heat required for silver soldering is the fire brick you mentioned above. Even heat displacement when soldering especial when working with silver less chance of hot spots causing the brass shim stock or thin sheet brass to warp or distort when applying the heat . Do you recall how long it took for the silver to flow properly . I have been all over looking for the best option in solder to use of pop pop engine. I have some plumbers solder it says 4% silver ? but not sure read somewhere lead free solder can cause weak joints with brass ? Also what torch did you use when soldering . Any additional help on best solder to use advice on ones you have tried and have seen good results would be appreciated David your pop pop boats are great !
@TheDenyingDutchman2 жыл бұрын
@@gofast1394 Plumbers solder melts at about 200 degree C. commonly referred to as soft soldering, which is no good. Hard soldering/silver soldering/brazing, is done at more than twice the temperature, exceeding 450 degree C. That's why a firebrick is quite mandatory, the workpiece will become red hot before the solder starts to melt. A regular hobby grade blow toch will do the job for small objects like pop-pop engines.
@gofast13942 жыл бұрын
Hello thank you for the response back I appreciate it . Question did you notes any difference in the metal after the thin brass was exposed to the high heat from silver soldering or hard soldering . Did it seem to get somewhat brittle at all ? I read brass has a somewhat high tensile strength when compared to copper for example, making it more susceptible to stress cracks as it is stiffer than copper which I believe is where brass originated from correct if wrong on that David
@TheDenyingDutchman2 жыл бұрын
@@gofast1394 When heating brass to the desired soldering temperature you're actually annealing it, making it more flexible, which can be very useful for bending brass tubes for example. Problems only occur when overheating, brass is a copper/zinc alloy. I'm not sure if zinc leaches out or is burned up if the temperature is too high.
@powderslinger59682 жыл бұрын
Instability of that sort is caused by excessive heating of the boiler. You can even cause it to run dry.
@TheDenyingDutchman2 жыл бұрын
The boiler of this engine doesn't contain any water, only superheated steam and air, water is oscillating in the tubes, occasionally water "overshoots' into (or near) the boiler where it - quite violently - flashes into steam. The engine is brazed (silver soldered) so it can withstand virtually any temperatures. It's horribly inefficient and has no practical use whatsoever, besides toy/model boats, but I like experimenting with these kinds of engines.
