The plastic cavity trays are a modern addition. For some reason they are going mad thinking that cavities are filling up with water, they aren't. It is utter madness. If you put a camera in any cavity early in the morning you will see moisture, we used to call it condensation. Now they call it water running down the cavity.

I'm a DIY-er doing some sand and cement render at home internally. I'm struggling to calculate how much sand and cement to mix for a given square metre. Is there an easy way to estimate quantities? Also, I bought Sikabond SBR+ and I can't interpret the dosage instructions on the bottle; I can't work out how much I should be putting in. And should this go in both the scratch and top coat? I watered it down and painted it on the brickwork first. I also have a plasticiser that I have been putting a tiny splash in each time. Is it okay to use that in combination with the SBR+? Thank you

So When i use sbr I always paint it on neat / pure and will coat over it while wet or tacky before it dries, when i add some to a mix I only ever add a drop full I believe there is loads off videos on my mixes on channel if you fancy a look.... There is for sure a way to calculate meter per weight of sand and cement im not sure on the mathematical formula but no doubt it would need the area and the depth added in then the ratio of mix and would give you what's needed to achieve this, thing is I have been doing it that long just go by eye and of course ever wall and backgrounds are different, will need different mixes and or more coats to get straight ect A good way to simplify how much you need is make one mix see how far that gets you then just multiply that and you will know how many mixes you shall need and how much materials hope this is helpful my friend

Thanks mate I really appreciate all your help. I'm having fun learning! Is it okay to put a dash of Sikabond SBR+ in a top coat? I've seen some fellas say "never put waterproofer in top coat" but I don't know why. I bought a scarifier that has flat teeth and I'm finding it isn't sharp and strong enough to scratch the surface a lot of the time. Did I buy the wrong thing? Are those style scratchers for a different type of plastering maybe?

Quick question roughly 1 bag of cement in the mixer how many shovels of sand for the first scratch coat and how many shovel fulls for the second coat. Be startin to plaster this garden wall next week. Them trays bring back memories going to a wee man in Coalisland to get them. He made them in the back of his house then

Maybe worth considering is putting some wood preservative on the sofit ends of the trusses such as Protum. Also think about where u are going to put down lighters in and get them boxed and insulated before it’s too late. We have down lights and I spent ages sealing them as they are drafty things

@@macplastering no lights inside the house but the wind here is terrible so on a windy night the air blows into the roof space and it them comes down past the down lighters. This is not a building control solution but I put terracotta flower pots over the and the foamed around the pot. That made a huge difference in the house but there are a few we cannot get to as there is flooring over them up stairs. If I was doing it again in would be a full insulated warm roof on the house and poly urathane in the cavity. It’s more money to buy but farther faster install on top of the roof

@@macplastering that whole roof space is vented and in the winding our loft seams to pressurise so it comes down. But if it come down then it’s a path for heat to escape. Here it also blows down the conduit and past wall sockets. When u really think about it very hard to get an air tight house hence the warm roof is best
