@@ultimaterankings1154 It is somewhere on the internet . Connie absolutely deserves the award . She payed her own way in the late 1960s to travel to Viet Nam to entertain and boost the morale of our American soldiers . While there , Connie performed the most important concert of all time , singing God Bless America while 25 thousand soldiers sang along with her . Connie's concert is more important than all of the Beatles concerts combined . Connie has sold more records worldwide than any other female singer as she sings in 16 languages . Connie should at least always be included in a list of top 10 entertainers and absolutely should always be in the top 10 list of female singers of all time . At least Connie sings and not just whistles !

Jim Brown and Barry Sanders are top of the hill . I think if they had the knee reconstruction we have today , Gayle Sayers would be up there with Brown and Sanders . Lions owners and top investors used Sanders to draw the crowds, endorsements etc. They pocketed money that they should have used to get the best lineman to block for Sanders

You forgot about Martina McBride and Reba. I think you got all my favorites on here except for these two. I think opera singers belong on a list of their very own. I don’t think Ann Wilson was far enough up on your list either. I’d agree with you about Whitney though. Her tone, and her style were spellbinding. The recording quality has improved over time and unfortunately too many mediocre singers use cheat tools to improve their performances that it pollutes the industry. I do think Gloria Estevan could have been mentioned. J Lo? Maybe separate the vocalists by genre because I think Rock , R&B, Jazz, Folk, Country, Metal, Christian and Opera would be better on lists of their own. Anyway I’d pick singers based on their range, pitch, tonality, diction, expression and power rather than popularity. I mean it’s sometimes the same thing but not all the time because some singers have no voice but are talented writers, musicians, performers and beautiful rather than pure vocalists. For example, Taylor Swift is a much better song writer than vocalist. Christina Aguilera is immensely talented vocalist but not a good guitarist. Beyoncé is great performer but not a Mariah Carey. If I just scrapped the list and admitted I love Whitney, Aretha, Ann Wilson, Christina Aguilera, and Carrie Underwood (by the way where’s she?) then followed Loretta Lynn???

Interesting approach but probably very flawed. Statistically I think factoring in the difference in average yds/attempt in different eras is correct but inevitably underestimates the difference. Outstanding players will capitalize on an easier era far more than the average player. Also I think that there's a big difference between the 2010s and the 2000s. Also 1950-62 was statistically easier than 63-99 (but not as easy as post-2000). This should raise alarms with the eyeball test you speak of (Tiki Barber being ranked above Marcus Allen... something's obviously gone wrong). From the late 90s onwards you're getting a talent drain for running backs because the talent is going to become receivers as they're now more valuable (unless they can't catch...). Another issue is averages favouring runners with breakaway speed. Obviously speed is a great asset but you can pad your stats with long runs when it comes to averages. The most glaring example here is Bo Jackson. Take out the handful of 50+ yard runs he made and his average drops drastically to someone who didn't run all that many yards and whose average is decent (4.4) but certainly not as astounding as it otherwise appears. Ultimately the quality of a team is probably much more significant than anything else and influences individual stats far more than you're crediting )I think you failed to mention how awesome the OLs that Dickerson benefited from at both the Rams and Colts were -though he's definitely one of the guys who deserves to be up there) I think the eyeball test you mention in the comments seems to favour evasive open field runners. I wouldn't agree that OJ and Sayers are clearly better visually than Payton (though they are better open field runners -Walter's a bit flat footed in open field) -they do have different qualities but I'd argue that Sweetness is as good to watch as anyone and his combination of agility with toughness is a thrilling combo. Anyway I though all your top picks were great and while the order wouldn't be the same as mine it was an enjoyable list and a fun approach to see -not convinced it's really any better than people just picking their faves though...
@ultimaterankings1154
@ultimaterankings1154 6 ай бұрын
I appreciate you liking my top picks but I disagree with you that my approach is “probably very flawed.” 1. “Outstanding players will capitalize on an easier era far more than the average player.” What evidence is there of this? Even if it is true it would only be very slight and not something that you could quantify. 2. “Also I think that there's a big difference between the 2010s and the 2000s. Also 1950-62 was statistically easier than 63-99 (but not as easy as post-2000).” I see no evidence of any of this. 3.Your Breakaway Speed theory: I don’t agree at all with that and would argue that more likely the opposite is true. You are grossly underestimating the importance of big plays in football (and sports in general). A. They are a huge momentum builder and 50% of the time a momentum swing. B. Big plays result in fewer plays so there is less of a chance of a turnover during the drive, hence, it is more likely the team will score on that drive. C. Big plays result in fewer series of downs so less likely the drive will stall, and hence, again more points. 4. Payton did have good power for his size but he still was not as good a runner as the 4 I have above him. Sometimes, exciting athletes (i.e, Great open field runners) actually end up underrated because so-called experts claim they are overrated because the casual fan just sees only the exciting part and not their shortcomings. Sometimes true; sometimes not (Michael Jordan who was also very fundamentally sound). Deion Sanders I think is underrated because he wasn’t physical and not a good tackler. Yes, but no player in the history of football took away 50% of the field, shut down great receivers, and also made a lot of big, momentum changing plays. (One writer ranked him 123th greatest player ever (delusional thinking) and he was only 37th in a big NFL poll. He is the best corner ever and should be higher. Interestingly, Jim Brown was a lazy blocker and no one ever downgrades him for this (voted best NFL player in history in 2000 by the AP). 5. I agree the quality of the team and offensive line are important but an offensive line quality is especially subjective and very difficult to quantify. Because of this, it seems random on how much weight you put on these things. Hence, I tried to take these things into consideration but not go overboard with them. Anyways, thanks for commenting and I’ll put some thought into whether I underrated Marcus Allen.

@@ultimaterankings1154 1. I don't think you need to see evidence of it -it should be self-evident. However, I do think that there are a suspicious number of the better RB's who started out in the 90s who started producing significantly better numbers during the 2000s when they were getting older. This is unusual -especially for RBs. So I do think there is some evidence (though certainly subjective) to support this. So, I'm not convinced the effect is as negligible as you seem to. 2. I don't get what you're saying. That the eras I mentioned are statistically advantageous to RBs is a fact. How much of a difference that makes is subjective but as I've indicated above I think there's reason to believe its significant. As defences have increasingly shifted to focus primarily on passing from the late 90s onwards it should be obvious that it'll affect rushing. 3. Again, I think you're just denying a fact here. You're certainly (correctly) entitled to see the value in breakaway speed and the momentum and impact such players can provide but it is just a fact that when it comes to averages it does distort the expectation of what a player will regularly achieve on an attempt. If you are using averages as your fundamental base to build your entire list from then I do think this is worth bearing in mind. This is especially true of Bo Jackson since while other players will generally lose a few tenths from their average he loses over a whole yard from his average when his 50+ yard runs are excluded. Don't forget that the impact of long breakaway runs are still reflected in TD stats. I can remember John Riggins being used over and over as a bulldozer grinding for short yardage gain which must have been murder on his average. I can't imagine that Sayers would've been used the same way very much. A player's qualities will influence how they are used. 4. I have no problem with you placing Payton below those guys -everyone's entitled to their opinion and those guys are all great. I just don't agree that they are clearly better runners as you claim based on an eyeball test. They are definitely all better open field runners but in tight spaces and under pressure I think Payton is much better than all those guys with the exception of Sanders. That's where Payton shines as a runner and I think is readily apparent on an eyeball test. As you say he is also much more physical than all but Brown which does also have impact on the opposition that can't be measured in averages. Anyway, glad to hear you'll give Marcus some further though (Tiki Barber...sigh).
@ultimaterankings1154

1. It is not self evident, you are just re-stating without evidence your original statement. I'm just not convinced of your theory, in fact, the opposite is more likely to be be true. Elite runners will always be great, but the easier conditions will actually make it more likely and more often that average runners look good. 2. The eras differences are what I said in my video and not what you wrote, just look at the numbers. Not sure where you are getting your facts from. 3. I am not denying a fact, I am merely disagreeing that a runner with long runs is overrated merely because his average goes down more when you remove his longest runs. Of course that is true, but it does not make him overrated and it more likely makes him underrated for the reasons I gave (in other words, these advantages more than outweigh your argument). In addition, it is a rather arbitrary thing to do: should for example, we subtract runs that lose yardage because it lessons their average for their other runs more? Same thing that you suggest and just as illogical. @@sirperybLakeney 4. Your entitled to your own eye test. 5. While Payton was a more physical runner than Sanders, OJ, and Sayers, I don't agree that made him better in tight spaces (better with contact yes) because the other 3 were all shiftier runners that Payton which helps in tight spaces. In addition to this they had more speed and quickness than Payton. These two areas more than offset Payton's advantage in power, hence, they are better runners and the stats are consistent with this. I love Payton and he was a great all around back, but as a pure runner his is a tad overrated by his fans (most of whom never saw Brown, Sayers, and Simpson run). In fact, if Sayers hadn't gotten seriously injured twice (or he had modern medicine), or if Simpson's first 3 years weren't wasted (most running backs best years) by two terrible coaches and 3 terrible teams and offensive lines, they both had the potential to be greatest runners ever. I can't say the same for Payton.
