Before applying the oil, did you have to apply salt and let it sit in the flesh side?

I seriously doubt any of those fish were Smallmouth Bass. They appeared to be Smallmouth x Alabama hybrids. One of the fish you kept had white caudal fin margins, so it could've been an Alabama x Bartram's or a Smallmouth x Alabama x Bartram's hybrid. Bartram's Bass are the native upland species of black bass in the Savannah River drainage. Most anglers call them 'redeye bass'. At some point Bartram's Bass were introduced to the upper Saluda River but they're not native to that river system. Largemouth Bass and Bartram's Bass are the only black bass native to upstate South Carolina. Here's where it gets confusing. In 2008, Northern or 'Kentucky' Spotted Bass (native to the Mississippi River Basin) and Alabama or 'Coosa' Spotted Bass (native to the Mobile River Basin) were split into two species-so now you technically have Spotted Bass and Alabama Bass. Spotted Bass and Smallmouth Bass coexist fine because both species are native to the same (Mississippi) river system. Alabama Bass and Smallmouth Bass readily hybridize because those species are native to completely different (Mobile vs Mississippi) river systems. South Carolina does not have Spotted Bass (Micropterus punctulatus). The 'spotted bass' in South Carolina are Alabama Bass (Micropterus henshalli). They were illegally introduced by anglers from Lake Lanier, and they readily hybridize with Smallmouth Bass and the native Bartram's Bass. Hybrid black bass can also spawn with either parent species. This is called a 'backcross'. After several generations of backcrossing hybrids can resemble parent species (but they're still hybrids). BTW formal scientific names aren't given to hybrids so there's really no such thing as a 'meanmouth' bass-that's just a nickname given to Smallmouth hybrids. Just like there's no such thing as a 'tiger bass'-that's just a nickname for a first generation (F1) Largemouth x Florida hybrid.
@dwhunter8904Ай бұрын
Smallmouth X spotted bass equals “meanmouth bass”. Good catch.
@carolinabushwackerАй бұрын
yeah but they say there is no spotted bass in the river

I was fishing beside this old black man one time and he was keeping the real small pan fish and throwing back the big ones and when I asked him why he was doing that he said he said he would descale them and cut the head off and guts out and throw them in food processor/blender and make bream patties. like salmon patties but with bream. Ive never tried it but I reckon it might be pretty good. Anyway great video as always. I hope you have a great memorial day weekend brother. Tight lines and stay safe out there
