Sarah Burns has a very affordable product for the average and active artist. I really enjoy the brushes and quiche tutorials. Her boxes are built on learning from box 1 through all the lessons. I teach grad school and expect students to learn in every course that is a prerequisite…good method.

Hullo, I thought you did a lovely job with your re-do painting! Gouache is a much "heavier" medium or you might say watercolor is lighter or more translucent! I have been watching Sarah's videos and looked at her Patreon, but I will have to hold off as I am still trying to afford the actual gouache paints! I do hope you continue with Sarah's subscription boxes and share what you are learning because of them! Thank You and Please have yourself a lovely Day!

Thank you for you kind words 😊Yes you are right paints aren’t cheap if you want something of reasonable quality. Probably the best value is to buy a really small set of primary colours and a white as you can mix a whole range of colours from these rather than buying the sets of 12 or 24 colours. The advantage also is that you get better at colour mixing too 😉 of which I am a great advocate, I hope to do some videos on this subject.

A beautiful watercolor. Thank you. I saw a video in which you did a similar art in gouache. I was curious about your opinion of gouache now. I vacillate between gouache and watercolor. I know it’s not either/or, but I feel that I need to knuckle down to one.

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement 😀 I am not so experienced with gouache so I have to think a lot more as I paint! I like the fact you can change you mind with gouache as you go - the rocks changed colour several times in the gouache version! In this way it is more like oils. I will carry on doing some gouache but I am in love with the translucency and the surprises you get in watercolour. I don’t think one has to choose and you can use them together, after all watery gouache is much like watercolour! I know what you mean though about concentrating on one or the other but I would be inclined to go where the mood takes you 😁

Thank you for the video. Very nice too hear from someone who had got a box. I have followed Sarah for some years and really like her channel and was tempted to but a box to try her brushes and a paint brand that is new to me. But some things made me hesitant. First it is he high cost, for someone in Britain it might be ok, but for me, in Sweden, the British pound is too expensive compared w my currency and that makes it far more expensive in real life than if i had lived in the UK. That of course is no fault of the box per se but something that has to be taken into consideration for international subscribers and for Sarah and Craftamo to consider as I suspect most of her audience is outside the UK, perhaps mainly in the US? Secondly I feel a bit suspicious when an artist in her own videos clearly uses other brands as her favourites ( D Smith, Schmincke , W&S) but never seem to use ShinHahn, the brand that comes in the boxes. Why? Does she not really like these colours and only uses them becuse Craftamo got a deal w Shin Hahn who saw a way to get their brand promoted by a popular gouache influencer? I have myself never painted w ShiHahn goache so I do no know how the qualiy compares to W&A, Schmicke etc that I am used to and like very much. But why a different brand of gouache in these boxes to those she seems to use on her own channel? She is using the brushes on her channel so those might be interesting to try, but for over 55£ a month w postage I am very hesitant. I would like it to be possible to buy just one or two brushes to try, not a whole set of brushes or one of these boxes, for that to be cost effective they would have to be enrmously superior brushes indeed! So I am torn, I might go ahead and buy one box just to satisfy my curiosity and to support an art influencer ( even though I am a bit torn about that too, for me an artist should earn an income selling art and teach art, not by selling ” my life as an artist” on the internet, but Sarah is very generous in her free videos with advice so I tell myself it counts as teaching and so she passes my ”artist test” w flying colours!) I am sure the tutorial is well thought out and good value, after all I like to watch her channel and I like her approach to painting and she seems a very nice lady too.

Thanks for you comments. I know what you mean about the Shin Hahn but to be fair I think it is relatively new to her. It has never been in the mix when she has done her extensive brand reviews and she is not complimentary about all gouache brands. It may not be her favourite brand above the brands you mention but it is cheeper than those and probably more suited to the price they can sell the boxes at. I found the Shin Hahn good and I certainly feel it sits in the professional category and seemed the same as some other professional quality gouache I have.

BEWARE!! I ordered the monthly subscription and wanted to cancel as I cannot afford $62 per month. The box was fine but I cannot justify the expense (at least not for me) When I tried to cancel my subscription, I was told that I was obligated to purchase at least 3 boxes before I could cancel. I was not aware of that, but decided to cancel after my third box. I was then told that I would be missing out on a great opportunity and Dan offered me a discount of 25%. I said thank you, but I still can’t afford it, please cancel my subscription. He replied that I was obligated to not 3 months, but 12 and that if I canceled, I would be charged 20% of the remaining months (9 in my case). The way the sign up/ purchase page looks is deceptive. It appears that you can sign up monthly, but the fine print now states that you are signing up for a full year and will be charged a cancellation fee. To say I was incredibly disappointed would be an understatement. Had I known I would be responsible for a full year’s purchase at $62 (almost $750) I would never have tried it. And, to be honest, will never purchase from them again. Just a warning

I’m only a beginner in watercolour painting - so for what it’s worth - I like them both. As a study the first one is just fine, but I would probably say that I like the second one just a bit more and would be more inclined to frame it than the first one. I think it would put a smile on my face seeing it hanging on the wall! Thanks for your advice. Greetings from Hobart. 😃

I also subscribe to Emma L.'s art box, and I find that Sarah's is far superior to hers. The tutorials alone are almost worth the price of the box itself. Plus, we know exactly what paint we are getting - 15 ml tubes of Shinhan. I have only continued Emma's box because after getting one of Sarah's monthly boxes, I decided that the Emma's wasn't worth the money (her tutorials really lack in comparison, and we have no idea what kind of paint we are using, plus there is no way to replace anything) and I told Craftamo to cancel my Emma L subscription. They countered with an offer that I felt was more in line with the value of the product so I decided to continue. I have 2 more months left. I suspect the paint is really an inexpensive white label brand because she has freebies in every box. Not so much with Sarah's box, but we do have piece of mind knowing exactly what we have in addition to the top notch tutorials. I hope you have continued to enjoy Sarah's product. I know I have!

I think you way way undervalue the tutorials here.. Each months tutorial/digital content is about 1.5-2h long and very in depth and additionally you get scans, written descriptions and reference pictures. If you buy on-demand video workshops you often pay quite some (more) money for similar things. You know how much time it takes to produce video content. I mean oppinions differ and I'm totally fine with that. But to me that part is valued way too cheap in your calculation and I think all in all that box is worth way more. Sorry 😊

Thanks for your comment - I am glad you have emphasised this. I totally agree with you - massive amounts of work and experience go into the tutorial/digital materials. I perhaps did not emphasise it enough in my video - it is not so much that I think the tutorial is only worth £10, rather, that was what was left after costing the more easily knowable material costs. I would gladly pay £10 and more for the tutorial side which is why I feel it is value for money and don't resent the addition of the postage on top of this cost as I think the tutorials are worth more :)

The first box was good value, but I felt like everyone else the postage was way too much. I have received four boxes now and I am going to cancel. The subject matter has become boring and way too much the same. Two tubes of paint and two brushes, do not justify the cost.

I feel I can justify the postage addition because the tutorial is worth more so I don't feel as bad about the cost ;) Of course if you have plenty of paints and brushes already and don't need more then it begins to make it a more expensive proposition.

I cancelled my subscription after 6 months. I found the tutorials to be a bit boring and I didn’t like the idea that she (Sarah) veered from the beautiful paintings on the boxes in the tutorials. She said she did that for variety and to keep from boredom herself, but I wanted to paint what was shown on the art box for that month, not something similar but different stylized versions. Also, shipping is high in US, and as a gouache artist myself with plenty of supplies, higher end gouache like schminke and M graham, I felt the Shinhan was lower quality. But when I contacted them to cancel, the company, Craftamo made it difficult. They said they had gone to a lot of trouble to put together the boxes and arrange their suppliers, like I should feel guilty for cancelling in mid subscription. When that ploy didn’t work, they offered me a 20% discount on the rest of the boxes so I could “complete my set of paints and brushes” as they put it. I didn’t like the back and forth cajoling on Craftamo’s part to try to keep me in the program. The support person emailed me back and forth about three times begging me to stay subscribed before actually agreeing to cancel the subscription. I’m just sharing my experience so others are aware of the issues. Also, you can buy a 12 tube set of Shinhan gouache on Amazon for under 50 dollars US currency, so getting 2 tubes of paint a month in a subscription isn’t that great a deal. The lessons are very good, but again, $62.50 a month for the boxes is a lot. I prefer better quality paints, for my money.

@@zenkittystudiowithdarklily1110I had a similar experience. They told me I couldn’t cancel without incurring a 20% fee for boxes left unsent (in my case 9 boxes) I thought my subscription was month to month. It’s quite confusing on their website and not at all transparent. So they wanted to charge me $90 to cancel. After many emails back and forth, they agreed on cancel my subscription. Pretty stressful, to be honest

One of my biggest art purchase regrets from last year was the craftamo x Emma LeFabrve subscription. The brushes were nice, but not worth paying $50 a month for. I subscribed to another watercolor subscription box for a couple of years prior to that which cost half the price and included 4 tutorials each month. It made me ke so angry that I paid so much for cheap mungyo paint and only one tutorial each month. As much as I love Sarah's work and want to help support her art I couldnt justify the cost for this box, even though it looks like the paint is hugher quality than the cheap watercolor they used in the Emma boxes.

I am sorry to hear that you didn’t find the Emma LeFabrve paints good quality. I think Sarah Burns really strove to get good quality materials included. If one is just stating out and needs paints and brushes then this is a good way to acquire them while also getting the teaching. But you are right the cost of these subscriptions do mount up and you have to be able to justify the cost to yourself!

Yes, you are right I just allocated the remainder of the cost to the tutorial which I think is exceptional value particularly when you consider all the work that goes into planning a course, trialing the materials, filming and editing not to mention the value contained within the artist’s years painting experience. I perhaps should have made it clear in the my video that I think the tutorial and teaching materials are worth more than that which is why I don’t feel so bad about the high price of the postage.
