My mum passed this test easily and was dismissed by her gp, despite it being clear to us she had memory problems. It was only when other medical professionals picked up on it and had her referred that she was diagnosed with vascular dementia having had several silent strokes. This 'test' is not fit for purpose.

Sorry but I have to ask if the test giver in the green suit was heavily medicated as he could barely keep his eyes open and his speech is a little slurred. I would question his ability to test anyone.

My brother took my mum the other day. When the Dr said what was the name and address. She said you didnt give me one 😮 I took her today for a blood test. Unfortunately the Dr didn't tell the nurse what it was for and the Dr was off. The nurse took blood anyway. Can someone please tell me what they are looking for in the blood. She also gave a urine test , again what could that show please.

My mom had this test at her primary care doctor’s office for years and always passed with flying colors. It was clear to all us family that she was suffering from some sort of dementia but when she passed this test all the time her doctor wouldn’t take further action. It was only after her endocrinologist noticed some memory issues in conversation he requested a MRI brain scan and finally was diagnosed with FTD behavior type dementia and you could clearly see parts of her brain were just gone. I was told people suffering from FTD generally do quite well on these types of tests for quite some time before they start getting worse.

do you give the patients any feedback, after they answered the questions? like "well done" to reassure them, even if they made mistakes or would that make it even worse later when they get their diagnosis and they somehow remember, that you, the doctor, told them, they did well, but now you're saying they have dementia or some other kind cognitive problems?

@@negotiableaffections It certainly has changed. There's an online test which is associated with researchers at Oxford Uni in the UK.I think. I did it several years ago and again recently. I can't think of the name of the group offhand but it's called the "cognitive awareness test". It gets updated regularly and they will give you a report on their findings. I think the group is called "Mind and Body awareness", or similar.

It's a great question, though, because it's not black and white. The client might remember only the number, or only the person's name, or only the street, or 2 or 3 of the above. I'm sure I'd remember the name "John Smith" because it's used as a placeholder name so often.

Do you know where the studies are on the efficacy of the 3 word recall test? There are 3 little articles I've found, but not any decent studies to justify giving that test to the elderly. I know it's a standard test and I'm betting someone came up with it decades ago, and it has just been passed on down without any clear research. I'm writing a graphic memoir of how I used my health and fitness knowledge to stop my mother with mild dementia from forgetting me, and I've been flummoxed on the actual studies for the 3 word recall test and the cube drawing test. How many people can go grocery shopping with 3 items in mind, and actually remember all three? My college freshmen cannot remember the 3 questions I ask them when they go around the room. Let me know if you can point me in the right direction. Thanks
