I made a Google Sheets doc so I only have to add my dimensions H-W-L and it spits out the final size for each part. For anybody who want's to create their own Sheet just use the "MROUND() function" to round up the 96mm sizing.

Great idea how about adding a protective pad as you mentioned a fridge panel. It would be great to lay it down on the smart bench with maybe 3 to 4 strips going across the bench and a pad would help it from sliding as you are cutting it. I too live in Washington state and I do a lot of kitchens etc. and find out that the finishes on the cabinets are easily scratched. The cabinet finishes in the 80's were a lot harder

I say, buy the plans package. All I wanted was the plan for the Smart Bench, but a few months down the line I have built the Bench, the router table, tool cubies, a lot of drawers, and 3 Smart Karts for some of my lighter fixed tools: 2 bandsaws, and an Inca TS. I have been cabinetmaking at a high hand tool standard (and power tools) for over 50 years, but disorganization crept up on me. Also, at retirement age, I will need to downsize at some point, and if I had the space in my driveway (too many boats), I would be building out a tool trailer, so that when I move nearer kids, downsize, go to my vacation home, etc... i will have the bare minimum in a ready to go package. And if I think of all the younger stages of my life, working on boats, moving to different rentals before I bought, (I was always white collar worker), this stuff would have been perfect at all those stages also. I was lucky to find house with a 60 foot workshop, in a tight neighbourhood, but it is a lot easier to find a house with a long driveway... Another thing I have is a vacation home I move to 6 months of the year. I have very few tools there, so that isn't efficient, and guess what I am leaving in my main home unattended for 6 months...

This is a very interesting video on door benches. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLpxpdiVm9Dbp3U.html I use my PSB, but it is heavy to lug up stairs. Interesting feature of these door benches is that they are narrower... Wait for it... To fit through doors. And topless. So light in fact that they carry a ton of tools in them which seems a little counter productive, as far as the weight is concerned. I think they would benefit from Smart Karts at times. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i92EmKukyajbYWg.html The guy at the end has a few interesting features on his bench that Paulk benches might use. His internally mounted magnets, are going in my bench. I have the right chamber in my PSB for personal tools like pencils, squares, hearing protectors, and a magnet might be an idea in there, for bits and such. At 8:00 he has a good use for your favourite cam clamps.

My process for hanging doors is to stack them all in one location, usually the garage or great room. I then hang the doors and distribute them to their respective openings. I don't move my door bench to the installation site, so fitting through a doorway isn't as useful as having a bench that works for the entire job and can also be used to hang doors.😎

Ron - what method did you use to measure for the replacement window prior to purchase? did you use an outside measurement? We have a stucco over concrete block house on the east coast of FL and I'd like to tackle this job as a DIY as well - but didn't see how you ensured you ordered the correct sized windows to complete your project - thanks. BTW, great content.
@TheSmartWoodshop4 күн бұрын
I was able to measure the outside. The windows were caulked in, but I could clearly see all four edges. This is a block home, so there are standard sizes. Lowe's had all of them in stock, so there was no wait time and significant cost savings over a custom order.😎

I build mine differently. I actually used the drawer jig. It spaces 3.5" apart. I worried that might mean some inefficient spacings, but it worked out fine. The cubbies are spaced 2 inches. So I ran the drawer jig twice. It is a few more slots, but probably only a minute longer for more slots, and another minute for more shifts. Turns out the 3.5 is more than enough for the Dewalt batteries I use. measure your batteries that is the main issue. The way I built my drawer jig, and would build a cubby jig, was I just laid a full sheet of plywood across the frame, glued and screwed, and then I used my track saw to cut out the slots. I laid some lines out on a stick for the spacing of the slots. But one could easily use a spacer to move the track saw fence along. For me the deal breaker is storing all the jigs one ends up with. Almost more trouble than making another jig, which is kinda fun.

I’m with you. Simple and lightweight. I think you’re more likely to use it more often if it’s easy to grab and store. About 8 years ago ago I bought a new Dewalt job site table saw. Just so I could have something to use temporarily for crosscuts, I quickly made a half sled with one runner on the left. I intended to make a more elaborate one later but I’m still using the same one. It’s easy to grab and it fits just about anywhere in my truck. I’ve often thought about if I were to build one like yours without a rear bridge how it would work out. It doesn’t need to be there for any other reason than to keep the plywood from warping. I’m interested to see how it works out for you over time. 👍

My wife is a professional seamstress. I commissioned her to cut open the end of a regular Festool bag and sew in a robust zipper to reclose it. The zippered bag empties just as fast as the Festool Forever. Best to have your seamstress perform this surgery while the bag is new, so as to avoid dust in her sewing room.

If we're not fitting two saws, wouldn't it be easier for us to mount the Dewalt saw so that it will be flush with the additional 18mm plywood and then make the actual extensions around the saw? That way you can cut the extensions a little long, press them up to the base of the saw, and then drill your 20mm holes?

I decided to skip the miter saw pre-pattern step and wing it. After hours of making awful, irregular cuts with a jigsaw, drill press, and 4" circular, I went back and made a perfect pre-pattern stencil on my miter saw in about 2 minutes and then cut a perfect stencil pattern with it. Next time I will trust the expert.

One advantage to the thinner bench top is that it is a lot easier to run clamps in. Clamps fit fine in the 3/4" top, but they have to be more opened up to fit in there. So it is a little more awkward. And it gets worse when one is putting two layers together, or the clamp is closer to something that reduces access to the hole. So, whatever else there is to say, the 1/2" top has some advantage other than just weight and cost.
@tacticalskiffs813411 күн бұрын
Going back several years to when he created the design the first version was 1/2". About 3 years ago.
