Back in 2009 I was throwing around a pumpkin yamatamo sinko plastic at Marsh Creek State Park in Chester County Pennsylvania . I had just got into bass fishing from the shore. I had some varied success but plenty of action for a newbie. I was using an entry level Okuma spinning set up with some cheap 10lb mono line. I was fishing next to some students from West Chester University who were attending the same program I graduated from 15 years earlier so the mood was extra mellow and the bass and pan fish were bitting….On one of my cast my retrieve came to a dead stop there was no screaming of the drag indicative of a bass strike. This was a tug of war and yet felt like I was pulling up anything from a log to the bottom of the lake. I knew It was a fish but what the hell was it. I had experience fighting some monster blue fish and some large fluke. As I kept reeling the line the beast at the end of my line decided to reveal itself. It was a 4 foot long green and black tiger muskie. I reeled it up to the lake shore taking note that it looked very angry and well armed with those sharp teeth. I can honestly say this is a story about how I got away!!! All these years later, I am interested in catching and releasing these magnificent fish with minimal harm.

Nice catch. Great job with the fast release. Nothing will be better for the future of the sport than keeping the fish alive. Awesome!

To anyone reading this, husky jerks are your best friend. You can get 3 of them for the price of a normal Muskie lure, and they hold up relatively well. I’ve been Muskie fishing for 10 or so years and it’s still one of my go to’s, especially on a slow day.

I’d like to get your advice on some gear to purchase (rod, reel, line, hook sizes etc.. for fishing these small guys. I’m new to all of it and have tried smaller lures/hooks and my current fishing pole doesn’t do very well. I’d like to get down to that area this year, what time of year would I be most likely to land some of the brook trout. I live pretty far and will only be able to make it down once so I want to make it count.

A short rod will help with casting around all the brush. The rod in the video is a Shakespeare Slingshot. Any hooks up to size 4, and any light line up to 8lb test. For lures I've had good luck with tiny crank baits made for crappie. Honestly they'll hit almost anything, the key is keeping them from seeing you. Fall and Spring are great times. They spawn in the Fall, and their colors are more vibrant around then.

Completely agree you onky need a few lures, I would add a rubber in their like a medussa or bulldawg. Also hook cutters spare hooks and heat shrink, none of thos will break the bank but will save a fish cutting a hook , and adds life to a banged up bait when you need a new hook or two

Yeah, extra hooks and split rings are super handy. And I meant to say something about hook cutters or at least pliers with cutters built in, but I guess I forgot.

My grandpa always told me the whiskers sting, and he seemingly got a bloody hand from one once when I was with him....though perhaps it was a certain type from the ocean.
