the markers are a nightmare....I remember being at the battlefield and having a park ranger tell me that a marker for a killed warrior south of the Reno Benteen site was actually placed close to the path, RATHER THAN WHERE THE WARRIOR DIED, so that people could "see it"....ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?! THIS is what passes for "history" with the people who run that battlefielde!?!?

custer received WEAK "orders" at best....BUT this is not a "EITHER, OR" situation, this is a "BOTH" situation....Terry's orders were bad BUT custer didn't treat ANY of Terry's orders AS ORDERS. Few mention Tullocks Creek which custer was supposed to scout (a main purpose of cavalry) and send word to Gibbon as to what was found there....he blew that off entirely.... Because custer was NOT worried about the plains Indians escaping, he was worried about somebody else finding the Indians first or that there would be a battle where Terry or Gibbon's troops were involved AND THE BATTLE WOULD CREDITED TO THEM AS THE RANKING OFFICERS ON THE BATTLEFIELD. Anybody, custer included, who was "worried" about the Indians getting away would Not make the decisions or take the actions custer did...IT'S HIS ACTIONS THAT GIVE AWAY TO THE INDIANS THE ARMY'S PRESENCE IN THE AREA. If he had CONTINUED SOUTH TO THE HEAD WATERS AS ORDERED BY TERRY and then crossed west to the Big Horn, he would have been approaching the Indian camp from dead south CHASING THEM NORTH INTO BOTH GIBBON'S AND TERRY'S COLUMNS AND INTO A FIGHT THEY COULD NOT HAVE WON. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT CUSTER DID NOT WANT. HE HAD to hit the camp, on his own and win the big victory alone for it to be his. CUSTER'S ACTIONS could have caused the scattering of the camp which is the exact situation they all claimed to be trying to avoid. NOBODY thought it possible for a US Cav regiment to be defeated by plains warriors. The army's experience with the plains indians had often consisted of charging into a sleeping camp in the dead of winter and shooting people as they emerged from their tipis. ....this time they were wrong and it was brought about by custer himself

Hey let's say after the Civil War, Custer and Fetterman got a little cocky and underestimate the Indian. But the Natives suffered for it, it's just gave the white man a excuse to murder more for Land. Yes I'm Native American 😮

I watched a tv documentary many years ago on a guy who claimed to have survived, I don't remember many details but he described crossing streams of undrinkable water and apparently there is water so alkaline it can't be drunk. He claimed he escaped the fight and deserted and started a new life. He claimed he had to flee because his rifle got damaged in some way. He told his wife and friend many years laterv

There is a seemingly trivial point that lends a lot of credence to Finkel's claim. At least it does to me. Later in life, his wife came upon a newspaper article about a soldier who was seen escaping the battlefield. She read the relevent passage to him, which stated the soldier was on a black horse. Finkel responded, "That wasn't me. I was on a roan horse." If he had been lying about being at Little Bighorn, it would have been very convenient to latch onto that story as evidence for his claim. That he did not do so is compelling evidence, to me at least, that he was telling the truth.

The Wyoming State Museum in Cheyenne has Carrington's Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver on display. Excellent video, very balanced. I am in the camp that believes Grummond impulsively followed the decoys, got in a hot fight, and Fetterman moved to support him.

Dead horses are not true indicators of trooper presence, so Brown's horse does not necessarily mean the rider was there too. A rider, for various reasons, can lose their mount and the horse may run off in any direction and distance before being killed or captured. Only trooper bones or other trooper-related artifacts can confirm he was there. Indian accounts will also help confirm this. But the horse remains alone is not reliable information.
@TheStoryOutWest

That’s true, it is circumstantial evidence. But I think it’s important to note his horse was killed there.

I came here from the Donner Party story re-telling. Absolutely brilliant, thank you so much for doing this. It really helped bring it alive, especially in a story of such tragedy and moral ambiguity. Some people rose to the occasion, like John Stark. Others were shown up for thieves, amongst other things. Please do more of these! Thanks again

You think the federal government would keep the grass cut short so that you could see all the grave markers. the little bighorn is probably federal government land. they keep the grass nice and cut at other battlefield grave sites. they can keep the grass nice at the little bighorn.
