Hello. Thanks for reaching out to us with your question. Placing two kids that are two years apart can be a challenge. I know because we were in the same situation once. The good news is that you probably don't have any bad options. Just weigh the pros and cons and then choose what you think will work best in your situation. Your situation is a bit complicated since both of your kids are so close in their abilities. It is important that each child is being challenged at the right level in both language arts and math. These subjects tend to build upon previous learning in a very systematic way. You have quite a bit more leeway in science and social studies. For language arts, the two things you will want to consider for your 2nd grader is reading and writing ability. In our language arts program, the independent reading is a very important part of the learning process, so if your second grader is going to be working in the Age 7-9 level, you would want to be sure that your second grader is ready to start reading simple chapter books at a third grade reading level. If your student is not able to read these independently, then I would recommend starting with Age 6-8. If your 2nd grader is not quite there yet with the reading level, you can take what you know about how fast your 2nd grader learns and if you feel that this child learns quickly and would rise to the occasion, Age 7-9 still might be fine. What you don't want to do is finish the readings as read-alouds for most of the year. You student needs to be reading the books independently. As far as writing is concerned, your 2nd grader (and 4th) would need to be very comfortable independently writing 2 or 3 sentences on a topic before beginning the Age 7-9 level. Within the first few weeks, your students will learn how to write a structured paragraph. If your 2nd grader is not there yet, you could still adjust the activities so that your younger child is only asked to write a few sentences while maintaining the higher expectations for your older child. These would be modifications that you would be providing to your students, but they are not difficult. I hope this helps with your decision. Let me know if you have any additional questions. Keith
