Thanks for the review! Just a few notes on the ELSD as you mentioned the open diff a lot in your video. I'm not a huge fan, but to me it's bad due to the stress on the brakes, and the fact that you will lose a bit of power when it engages. To clear a couple of things #1. eLSD does work with all off (traction off and DSC off), and that is the best mode for track use, in my opinion. Also, I think you could be struggling with it due to your brake pads (or maybe because you are in GP Mode, not sure). I run with very aggressive pads (Hawk DTC60), and it does feel like a real diff, in that it doesn't spin the inside wheel. However, I have experienced what you seem to be getting when I ran with less aggressive pads. However, that was when I tracked a 2012 JCW with pads that were not up to the task (lots of inside wheel spin, on any kind of throttle during corner exit). I have GP2#37 that I only use occasionally at the track. I also have a 2016 F56 JCW that I put a Quaife LSD in. The GP2 feels very similar (i.e. you don't get wheel spin), but you do get more power out of corners with a true limited mechanical LSD (not to mention the torque of the F56 is huge in comparison). I am not a huge fan of how it shifts to 2nd. As you mention, there is not strong enough 'indent' for the pull over to reverse, but you get used to it over time (instead of trying to shift it to 2nd, just think about the direction of the shift and it will go). I did the exact same thing when driving on track the first time. Also, you don't need to toss it into the corners (but that is fun too!, haha!), the car is very responsive to trail braking and steering with the throttle. It's a lot of fun to drive, right out of the box! Tell the owners to try it with DSC off (one past the GP Mode) with some more aggressive pads (I run DTC60 front and DTC30 rear). One note is that I had to remove the stock bilstiens and put in PSS10 (with the GP springs), so not sure if that could also be related to your understeer/push on exit. When I bought mine, one of the stock bilstiens was already clunking (common issue), so I couldn't try on track with those. Great video, and love the enthusiasm for the GP2!

Sorry im late to the party! Ive been studying this chassis' dynamics for a little over two years right now. I can say that anything over 10kg on either axles is definitely over sprung for a non aero twins. 12kg squre spring rates produce the pitched ride characteristic. Bouncing and pitching back and forth are the by-products of this spring setup This chassis is really susceptible to the flat ride theory. In other words, stiffer rear (usually by 1 kg or 2kg w/ factory motion ratio) than front will yield fast settling over bumps. Flat ride also allows the shocks to run less damping, such that you're running less of a risk of packing down or overloading tires with damping forces. In all fairness i think flat ride will also help with mid corner rotation. Due to macpherson struts front design, at the absolute limit when all the contact patches are loaded up. Front axle usually loses grip first (lack of camber curve, granted static camber can fix this. But thresh hold braking can suffer).... such that having a stiffer rear to initiate that rotation during corner entry to mid corner will further help to eliminate some understeer. Shaftworks' Bilanx line up utilizes 6kg/9kg spring rate spec. I speculate that they have came to the same conclusion as i have discovered. Cheers, im loving your channel's contents.

This is prolly one of the major reasons why Toyota is planning on reworking the 86 platform. Using the 1.6 turbo of the GR Corolla with a hybrid set up makes sense as Toyota would have more control over the car and its performance as opposed to being left on the mercy of Subaru and the FA24 platform. The hybrid set up may seem a bit odd. Need to wait out to see how it would perform and feel. OR this could be the last of these cars we may see and Toyota might introduce a coupe type GR Corolla. Would love some discussion on this here. :)

Great video guys! My 1st gen has gone through about 5 engines now, 2 of them from catastrophic failures due to oil starvation. For the first 5 years it was fine, then I boosted it and dealt with overheating issues. After that issue was resolved, it got caged and then I lost two engines in a row from oil starvation due to high cornering (1.5-2G's), and they were also on long right handers! Now I have a built engine (2nd one) and it has the oiling upgrades necessary for Gen1's (KillerB oil pickup tube, Greddy baffle). I've done the Accusump route with bad results (1st built engine) so now I'm running without one with a half litre overfill (also 20w50 Amsoil since it is purely a track car now). Sounds like similar issues to Gen1 but now harder to upgrade the pickup tube. Hoping your video helps with exposure to get some solutions on the Gen2's. Cheers, Andre.

Love the analysis, but this issue has largely been solved by Toyota/GR Cup engineers. Setrab 915 oil cooler (delete factory heat exchanger), M1 0w40 oil, 0.7q overfill (7q total) and a stock oil pan with angled baffle. None of the 20+ GR Cup teams lost any engines due to oil starvation last year on that setup. This is running Conti slicks + aero. Pretty solid validation that setup works. No need to re-invent the wheel IMO, just use what is proven.

The fact that it only happens in right hand turns and not left ones is obvious that is a geometric restriction of the oil pan, pickup tube or timing belt cover. The only other components that are not symmetric would be the oil filter, and the oil pressure valve that could be causing some sort of restiction or release on lateral g forces. If I would go on designing a oil baffle, I would addres the asymetry of the timing belt cover first and then something like a fixed honeycomb arrangement inside the pan to prevent slushing.
@KevinWong_BRZ
@KevinWong_BRZ 22 күн бұрын
The oil filter is right on the discharge of the gear pump at the engine so its not a starvation path item. It is literally the first thing TO get oil. The oil pressure relief valve is also on the discharge of the pump and is a necessary item on all positive displacement pumps because catastrophic failure will occur if you deadhead (ie: fully restrict flow via the discharge) a PD pump.
@WakeMtz
@WakeMtz 22 күн бұрын
@@KevinWong_BRZ I still think is the timing cover the culprit. Even on Subaru's own documents, they mention some "new" ribs inside the cover to prevent this situation, but they never reached production. What I was saying about the release valve is that since it is mounted horizontally, maybe the strong lateral g forces are opening it, causing an oil loop that never reaches the engine. (Very unlikely but possible)
@KevinWong_BRZ
@KevinWong_BRZ 22 күн бұрын
@@WakeMtz the relief valve would have to be spring loaded in order not to open at anything other than deadhead pressure for the oil pump. If the spring fails and it opens during any lateral load, it would have opened during the cold start as that's the highest pressure normally. You seen it in the video. The oil is cold and thick and the revs high enough to hit 100+ psi. If the valve isn't cracking open then, it isn't opening on lateral load.
@WakeMtz
@WakeMtz 22 күн бұрын
@@KevinWong_BRZ If those factors are out of the way, then it is obvious the oil is creeping up and getting stuck on the timing belt, there is no other place on the engine that can hold that much oil to leave the sump dry. Maybe the the solution is to fill as much voids in the timing cover as possible and reducing the amount of volume it can hold.

@KevinWong_BRZ not when this car is advertised as an affordable sports/track car. It should be able withstand what they know these cars are going to be used for. They would've logged in plenty of laps during production, so either they know and decided not to address it or they didn't notice it with their testing equipment. The former is most likely the case, which just really sucks for its fans
