Hello fellow floridian! Wondering how far into 10A you are. I live in debary and I'm on the line of 9a and 9b literally on the line. I've been wondering if I'd be able to grow coconuts here. Maybe in a pot to keep it easier to protect the few days we get frost? I have 2 different types of sour sop, icecream bean, custard apple, star fruit, like 3 or 4 different types of dragon fruit, 2 maybe 3 different passion fruit, wonderful pomegranate and so much more. I've had them for at least 3 years so I've been able to keep them protected and growing nice and bigger every year. So I'd imagine if coconut will do well here. Do yall eat your sprouted coconuts? Or do you just move and plant them around the yard?
@IslandsnHighlandsКүн бұрын
You have a nice collection! Our ice cream bean hasn’t taken off yet, but I’m excited to see how that goes. I would try to find a sprouted coconut to try and plant so you aren’t out a big investment in case you lose it one winter. Are coconuts growing around your area that you have seen? That’s usually a good way to tell. We do eat our sprouted coconut apples/queens bread-it’s such a delicious treat. They have to have the right amount of sprouting-we have opened a couple overripe queens bread that isn’t as nice of a texture as the ones not quite as far along. We just found a volunteer passion fruit-I’m hoping it’s purple. We lost our purple after 4 years, so make sure you can get more baby vines every 2 years to keep it going. Now we have to wait again for the fruit, it is such a great prolific fruit to grow and makes everything delicious

#1, get some props for the limbs, #2 you have to thin clusters of peaches when they are small so they get size. Peaches need to ripen on the tree, green peaches are not going to be as sweet. We Had peaches on our farm in Niagara County New York. #3, you need to trim the trees, remove all the dead wood, and maybe get fertilizer stakes for them. We trimmed our trees in the spring, I used to have to rake all the cuttings to the middle of the rows so we could pick them up with the brush bucker on the tractor.
@IslandsnHighlands4 күн бұрын
Thanks for the tips. We we've been thinning the peaches all season but obviously still not enough. We were picking these to thin them out further. We have a TON that will ripen properly on the tree. After this season this tree is getting pruned big time!

Love the channel! random question, I live in central Fl as well and I'm working on getting my food forest set up with my family. What do you guys do to avoid being eaten by bugs? especially since ya'll roam barefoot. Every time my daughters help me in the yard and they are barefoot they get tons of bug bites. I get them too but not as bad.
@IslandsnHighlands4 күн бұрын
The bugs come and go in waves depending on the season, rain, etc- sometime we have none for weeks. But when we do have them, we use an organic homemade bug spray: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kM-qhtVqprebnqM.html I will say my brother and his family came to visit from north GA and they just got eaten alive by the mosquitoes and no-see-ums, while my family was barely effected doing the same activities. Maybe suntans help :) Best of luck with your food forest!
