I just watched the Extra History video on the Panama Railroad, even though that your video erased the countless contributions of the underpaid workers and even the indentured workers of the railroad, congratulations on making the video.

My question is, for the NY state only lines (like Hudson and Harlem), why do they use both NY (blue striped car) and CT (red striped cars) cars if those trains don’t run through CT? Why not just all blue striped cars? For example, the New Haven line only uses the red M8s.

I always wondered why the rail lines didn't work on business plans to augment RDC service. It seemed like they just purchased the cars and then put them on various routes which had low ridership or use. And, to comply with actual or possible ICC actions against them. This would have been a great chance for the government and private rail lines to come together and create something to provide this type of service. RDC didn't replace well used routes but became, in reality, a modern version of the old interurban lines. Working together they could have provided funding and the rail lines expertise to run and maintain the service. The ICC was constantly put in the position of playing bad guy to the rail lines by demanding they provide service to lines that fit the category of RDC routes. Often, they did use RDC cars to provide the service and hoped the ICC would allow them to end the service ASAP. Had they worked together, maybe established a concern to run these services, it might have worked and maybe created a blueprint for future operations. There are so many places in the history of US commuter and passenger service where had some people actually tried to make it work you have to wonder why they never did anything.

I grew up on the Reading at Wayne Junction and waited for the RDC into PHL over those ancient Electrics they were running . and also lived a couple blocks from Budds Hunting Park complex, and a bunch of our neighbors worked there. Although im sure these were built at the Red Lion rd plant.

I used to see these RDCs all the time on the new haven RR waterbury branch. I loved the hancock chime whistles that these RDCs had. I remembered that sometimes the NHRR borrowed an RDC from if I remember correctly the new york central RR . I remember that the nyc RDCs had leslie S3K horns.

I swear at one time there was a plan to put one of these jet train engines on one end of an Acela set so that it could provide service south of DC into Virginia.

The profit center of private passenger rail was mail and EXPRESS. Amtrak delayed trains cause it was underfunded from the first day. Amtrak president David Gunn gave the service away in a deal offered to him by the railroad lobby. To allow funding of Amtrak one more year! With record demand fares could be raised to make up the loss of revenue and they were. Which also controlled demand. It was a great service that I used. The private passenger rail system finally went bankrupt from coast to coast Oct 1th 1967 due to going out of the mail and EXPRESS business. It took four years of train losses for congress to start underfunded Amtrak. Which was to be gone in two years. Gas was 20 cents a gallon. It was a 1970 world. Package express, Fed Ex and UPS has grown 1000 times today, but Amtrak the fastest ground vehicle has been left out. Under 1000 miles trains overnight were just as fast as flying! But it's all truck today at very high cost. They run on those tax payer build billion dollar government highways. Taxpayers like the property owners the RAILROADS! Common sense tells you trucks with there highs use of fuel is not cheaper. Nor faster than the overnight trains.

Ahhhh a story as old as America. Invent an amazing thing that means you need half as much steel as a common train so the rich people that run the country won't make as much money aaaaaand you die mysteriously. Things never change.

Just a slight correction. The “Shoreliner” Bombardier built cab cars and coaches for Metro North east of Hudson service were nicknamed “Bomb” cars by the vast majority of train crews and mechanical workers. I worked with MN for 26 years and almost never heard them called Comets or Shoreliners.

Can anyone shed more light on the configuration shown at 10:26 - it looks like the RDC is pulling an unpowered streamlined car of some sort (note no radiators on the roof). I noticed this arrangement in a couple of the other photos. Was this a regular configuration for some operators? Did the other coach have a cab that could control the RDC, or would it have had to run around at the end of the line and recouple?

Great idea - but I doubt if would have been significantly cheaper to build a rail track with one rail rather than two - you'd still need all the earthworks, sleepers and signalling etc. And of course, a 2 rail system only needed a simple steam or diesel loco to operate, with no gyros. Cool that it leaned into corners though!!

I've seen videos on how the mechanism operated to keep it stable, and it's really a remarkable bit of engineering. Even if it never caught on, you have to admire the eccentric genius that worked out how to build it.
