If I was rodding a Volkswagen Type 1 back in the fifties, this would be the mill I’d use. Especially with a Judson Supercharger. I can see it lowered with a nice rake, white rubber on the running boards, Cadillac hubcaps and big and little whitewalls. White tuck’n’roll interior too. Paint? Maybe a Candy Apple Red or Candy British Racing Green, even black and flames.

A judson could not supercharge this 4 cam. you would loose power.

What a vintage beauty she is. Pure automotive royalty. The sound, the primitive technology, the petite rawness, absolutely love it.

That’s a beautiful sight. Does anyone know what it is about the 4 cam engine that makes it so notoriously difficult to adjust and tune? I’ve always heard that it takes an expert to tune it properly and it is difficult but didn’t know exactly why. I figured it had something to do with the timing but am not sure.
@edwardericson37384 жыл бұрын
It's mainly about getting the lash of the bevel gears that turn the cams correct. You have a shaft in the block (the "King Shaft") that's driven off the crank, a bevel gear on that which has to mesh to spec with the bevel gears on the bottom shafts that go out to the exhaust cams, two bevel gears there that need to mesh at the correct tolerances to spin those cams, then another two bevel gears that must be set to proper lash on each of the two that stand up to the intake cams, whence you find another two bevel gears to set up. First thing you have to get the cam lobes to within 4 degrees of correct, and you do this by pulling the respective gears off their shafts and moving them one spline whichever way. The splines are set so if you go forward with one and backward with the other you get a seven degree shift in timing. So do all those, starting at the bottom, and then it's onto the valve lash, which is the really tricky part! Don't forget the ignition timing though. On these early engines, with the distributors driven by the intake cams, the keyway would get sloppy fairly quickly due to the built-in imbalances of those two-lobe cams. There's a reason someone made that iconic "Micky Mouse" print.

I wasn't sure I believed that some had one distributor on each bank driven off the intake cam but here it is!

Maybe that's why it was misfiring!
@krusher748 ай бұрын
They did change it on the later engines for the double distributor to be crank driver as at higher revs the harmonics that came thought the valve train fucked with the points, but thats not whats happening here. @@newtronix

This engine will be on the market soon, the matching # Speedster is presently living in Northern California. Any serious buyers out there? The Porsche Museum has the other two of the first three production Carreras, this is the earliest 4 cam still in the wild. And it is an RS on the chassis plate!

if timing is good. hmm maybe valves sticking a little bit, after so many years. i would think just run it for a while and maybe put some marvel mystery down the carbs will work her loose.
