Ever notice that 95% of guitar for sale ads say: sounds awesome! Or one of the best guitars I’ve ever played! Come on, they all can’t be winners.. Just once I’d like to see some honesty: I’m selling cause the pickups sound wonky or there’s a couple of dead spots above the fifth fret.

Had a terrible thought it was going to be reunion blues and European availability was going to take a hit. I like the SW approach on this and it makes a lot of sense. Oddly I realised that we have a couple of gators from back when, but haven't actually bought any in many years, preferring RB for gig bags and Ibby hard cases (surprisingly high quality and affordable for a manufacturer's case.)

The tone wood debate is so stupid... Wood likely impacts tone on a solid body guitar, but not in any big and meaningful way. Wood on an acoustic instrument is different, the top vibrates and different woods make it sound much more different. I've seen Paul Reed Smith talk about wood as if it's the most important thing. He knocks on wood to show that different woods sound the same. But the most stupid thing he said was when he talked about different singers (I don't remember if it was Streisand and Sinatra, or two other well known singers, man and a woman), and he talked about HUMAN VOICES as his proof that wood is the decisive factor for the sound of a guitar.

So what you’ve started now Phil is tone paint , 😂 , do darker colours have darker tones ? Does yellow mean more midrange? Is red the most rounded colour ?

A guitar case is basically an empty protective container. It's size and volume remain constant whether it's full or empty. Co-ordinating guitar manufacturers with case manufacturers could mean that the case almost comes free if there is a guitar in it. Packaging and logistics are a major price factor on items shipped from distant countries. This could be a gamechanger. Cases themselves aren't that difficult to manufacture. No electronics, playability issues or many other factors. QC is therefore straightforward and quick, even producing a model for a different guitar is quick and straightforward.

Every time someone brings up "Tonewood" on the internet they're just stirring the pot. Hearing is subjective or you can be'lie've the numbers on a chart, which isn't how we hear sound. This debate will go on for years. I'm 44 years old, I have my opinion & everybody else is entitled to their own opinion. For me it has a minor effect, it's more the sum of all of the parts, pickups, amps & speakers make a more drastic change in my opinion. I'm not right & I'm not wrong, that's what I hear. The wood used makes a difference to the sound but I think many other things change the sound as well.

That Heritage sounds great! The definition from PU to PU clean is ideal IMO - lots of character, each position has its own personality! (Longtime '68 Custom player here and this 'feels like home' to me). If I was in the market for something in this price range I would certainly go for a Heritage . . . maybe deep burgundy, ebony board, 'lighter' frets etc. etc. Maybe Xmas! 😅

If your "review" is paid for or has bullet points it is not a review. At best you could call it a demo, but calling it a review and or not disclosing is a federal crime.

The current line of 5420s are fantastic guitars. To me, though, it's a hard task to surpass my 6120 Smoke. The comfort and ease of play on my 6120 surpasses all my other guitars and that's something the 5420 falls slightly short on, but it is worthy of being a #3 or 4 guitar if I wasn't saving for a Falcon and 5622.

People who play dirty can't hear it... people who play clean can. If you can't hear it, why wouldn't you want a 3 pound plastic guitar that will never warp? In a quiet room, play electric guitars turned off. They sound different. They vibrate differently.
@Hypervigilant
@Hypervigilant 4 сағат бұрын
Overtones, also known as harmonics, are additional frequencies that sound above the fundamental note you're playing on the guitar. They are whole number multiples of the fundamental frequency, and they contribute to the richness and complexity of the guitar's sound. This is affected by the vibrating wood. It is a fact that guitar wood vibrates. You can feel it. It also affects sustain. In addition, since different woods vibrate at different frequencies, it then affects the strings differently. The vibrating wood causes the strings to vibrate. Hardwood vibrates at higher frequencies, and so on. This affects which strings vibrate and how much etc. With your guiar off, strum the strings. You can feel the whole guitar vibrate. After it settles down, smack the body... you can see strings moving. Different woods and the materials that interface between the wood and the strings, affect the frequencies. When you strum an E chord, it'll always sound like E, but overtones are happening as a result of everything I described above. Those overtones are tone. It's the character of the voice. How the hell can a guitar player not know this? Research overtones. When you pluck a guitar string, it vibrates not only as a whole, but also in halves, thirds, quarters, and so on. Each of these vibrating sections produces a different frequency, with the whole string producing the fundamental note and the smaller sections producing overtones. Your ear perceives these overtones as part of the overall sound of the note, giving it its unique timbre. How the wood vibrates affects all of that. When you pick a single string, it causes other strings to vibrate sympathetically and that creates overtones. How the wood vibrates affect that, too. If you add so much effects to the sound it can drown all that out, but it doesn't mean wood doesn't affect tone. Two strats that have everything the same but the wood type or weight played clean on an amp can sound different. If you can't hear it, that's your problem, not ours.

Isn’t the genius of selling the cases with the guitar is that you eliminate the double shipping? They put the guitar in the case and ship it - two sales, one shipping cost. Forgive me if that is what you were implying.

The case issue has been an interesting chapter in Corporate Cheapness for several years. SW's vertical alignment purchase of Gator is good for business, good for guitar buyers. Gator makes good cases. Paul Smith is likely the smartest guy in the room regarding guitar stuff, so I can accept that he thinks the way he does and even that he perceives the thing as he does. The guy may have the ear that is equivalent to the eyes that tetrachromats see the world through. For those of you keeping score at home, the way we observe the universe is what we build the rules of science on, and that has been one of the more human bits of bungling through a thing without really having our finger on its nose. For me, i dont need to think about Red-Shift physics rules or unified ear field guitar theory, however. They just let me out of my cave and im mostly just into clapping and smiling.

Wheelin and dealin is part of the game. If you arnt going to counter offer my offer then you get no sale. No haggle pricing is a dick move. Its not what doing business is about. Price your junk with a built in cushion. This Im so afraid of confrontation has to stop. Talk about it, work out a deal. Then the seller can walk away thinking they made good money on the deal and the buyer walks away thinking they made the deal of the year. Everyone happy.

Hey Phil - I'm one of those boomer newbies who picked up a guitar and started taking lessons during the pandemic, and have learned so much from your channel, thank you! Also retired corporate market researcher who worked with some of the largest global companies & brands during my career. Not privy to proprietary musical instrument market data, so no idea of how much market growth was driven by new entrants (first time guitar purchasers) vs. existing players expanding collections -- but please don't infer broader market trends from anecdotal "poll" from a silly sample from relative handful of your subscribers. (In the industry we called this "mother-in-law" surveys.) Obviously the sharp uptick in market expansion was driven by both and further fueled by supply chain challenges. Of course this wasn't sustainable despite overly optimistic misguided forecasts by corporate executives for their investor stakeholders drinking the kool-aid. The real question is what happened to historic "churn rates" -- a term usually applied to subscription services like streaming or cable TV -- but in this case rate of new category guitar buyers / those exiting category (i.e., in the past guitars relegated to a closet or the attic and today listed on eBay/Reverb). And it's not as if this was unprecedented: following the Beatles on Ed Sullivan US electric guitar sales skyrocketed, so CBS throws lots of money at Leo and what became Norlin acquires Gibson brands from CMI. And of course that growth surge wasn't sustainable as Beatles don't pop up every year and not so many teens picked up guitars after watching The Partridge Family ....

That Heritage is so nice, and sub 8 pounds but getting rid of your Les Paul's? Come on! Phil is such a huge shill, actually embarrassing. They just decided to make Phil not one but two guitars the first Phil conveniently didn't like for a made up reason and so it looks legit. I have played Heritage guitars and they are nice but have a flee market guitar vibe to them. Phil the shill.

If the retailers really want to save money shipping cases- they could save a ton of money by shipping the cases and guitars together. Yes- take the guitar out of it's box and put it in the case you just bought. I've bought guitars in the past wishing they would do this, but they don't.
