So bit of an odd question but I suppose you're the only one who'd know the answer: Lets say Elizabeth abdicated, and then Charles abdicated so William has the throne What would we call them? "Queen Grandmother" sounds most obvious but a bit cumbersome. And "King Father", the most direct opposite to Queen Mother, just sounds a bit silly

Does national service just mean military service, or are there other forms? In WWII, one of my grandfathers was exempt from the draft because he owned a gas station (petrol station), which was considered vital to the war effort. My other grandfather was an army doctor.

I can’t overstate how much I love this video. I grew up in peak AG doll US and had Kirsten and just absolutely loved learning from the books of all the girls. I also really loved your overview of the Pleasant Company era when historical accuracy and education were at the forefront. Pure joy! Would love a part 2

OMG - possibly Chaucer’s patron became “John of “Galt or Gaunt” in the catch phrase “Who is John Galt” in the books by Ann Rand such “Atlas Shrugged” and “The Fountainhead”

Note to self. If I was given the chance to be reborn into old england territory. I would choose something in the last 400 years. That way I would stand a chance at understanding the language. haha

I think it’s unfair that most people think of Medieval History as “A peasant” and of Rome as “A slave standing next to a dude in a Toga”. All the cities and roads and trading and military infrastructure that Rome is famous for is only at the highest socioeconomic level. The vast, vast majority of people worked their farm or orchard just like the peasants would work the field. The only question is if your lord holds a banquet or a triumph.

I do a lot of accents, and I find it saddening when certain dialects disappear. Here in the States, it's even more saddening because most of the dialects (or even entire languages) are from Native American tribes. Sometimes, there are only three or four aged members (usually in their 90s) who speak it, and even they say that they don't remember many words from the time that their parents and grandparents were alive. Creole is slowly dying and Gullah is fast declining. 😢😢😢

I have adhd and here in the USA if you're a medicated ADHDer and can't live without it for over a certain amount of time you can't enlist. Idk if that helps, i believe it would be mentally disabled, and it's cheaper than medical school😅

I recall this subject from Belgium happening way back in 1995. King Baldwin just died and his brother Albert became the new king. So as there were questions around what to call the old king's widow, some law scholars made that point that being queen is a noble title that once given can not be revoked. So technically, for the next 15 years, Belgium had one king and two queens. The question came up again in 2002 with the birth of princess Elisabeth, who is now next in line to the throne. So if the queen dies, would her husband still be king. Short answer: yes, he would still be king but not 'Head of State', so theoretically Belgium could be having two kings 60 years from now.

People ask you that because they're tired of feeling villainized for the actions of people they dont know that have been dead for at least a century. You personally may not be guilty of that villainization, but it is common.

Homework: In Boudica's motivational speech to her army, well documented, she specifically cites the excesses of Romans drinking unmixed wine - surely, a reference to the practice of watering wine to make it less strong. From this we can gather that Boudica supported temperance in revelry and carousing. Boudica would absolutely have been in favor of establishing more non-alcoholic bars.

So I wonder how much the emergence of the plague also affected stuff. Lacking medical knowledge means that it killed not indiscriminately but still more equally (poor people with worse nutrition n stuff will have worse prospects ofc) so a lot of things come together & losing a lot of population will just lead to issues, obviously
